Walking the dog with rod tip high

Featured Replies

I saw a guy this past weekend fish a walk the dog bait with rod tip high.  From what I've learned on the site and have read, walk the dog is supposed to be done with the rod tip low.

Walking with the rod tip low hurts my wrist after about 7 retrieves.  I tried it with the tip high and the lure seemed to have the same action and a little less stressful on the wrist.

Any of you guys walk with the tip high?  Any disadvantages of walking with the tiop high instead of low?

Cheers.

I keep my rod tip at 10:00/11:00 position for walking baits.

When I walk the dog I have my rod tip 7:00/9:00 or so. I do it high if I have to if i'm from shore over brush or something. I dont get the movement that I do when it's low.

I fish out of a runabout vs. a bass boat, I have to find way's to "adjust" some presentations. I have had no issue using spooks and other topwater lures with the rod tip higher up. The only problem is, as you get to the boat, the action is harder to maintain becouse of the angle of the line.

this is true too.I think rod action has a little to do with it too.A softer rod will walk easier up high.I use a pretty stiff rod myself.

Biggest disadvantage? When you get struck up high you will have to reel up slack to set the hook many times especially if the fish streaks towards you.

An advantage with the rod tip held high is it keeps the line off of the water.....

I start from a long cast with rod tip high to keep most of the line out of the water, as stated,  than as I get closer to the boat I lower the rod tip.

I'm with cousin Eddie here.  The farther the lure is from you, the more "natural" it will feel to have the rod tip higher. Then as it gets closer to you, you will natrually adjust by lowering the rod gradually. To me high is about 10-11 o'clock.

The bad thing about going any higher than that is that there will be little to no room to make a line tightening hookset because the rod is already in the position it will be at the end of a typical hookset. In other words, it would be a weak hookset most likely.

As long as you can impart the right action to the lure, your rod doesn't even need to be vertically positioned.  You can also walk the dog with your rod more parallel to the water if you need to.
