cant choose a flippin' weight

Featured Replies

Ok got a few questions here:

What is your fav. flippin weight?

Do you prefer a screw-in weight (florida weight) over a regulair free sliding weight when flippin?

Thanks

on beavers i use clamshots besides that i like slip weights

Free sliding weight, but I peg it. Go figure. :-/

Depends on what type of cover your flipping & how deep   :)

I agree with Catt, but think it has more to do with how the fish are holding to the cover.  If they are tight or way back in it you have to peg it or go with a screw in weight.  On the whole though I don't peg it unless the fish are reluctant to stray from the cover.  I use a 1/8 free sliding tungsten most of the time.  Kind of light I know, but i'm usually flipping to flooded timber and don't have to worry about penetrating grass so much.

always the lightest possible weight I can get away with. I also use free sliding (tungsten) and peg it.

I like the idea behind the screw in but never liked in in use.

I like screw in weights because they hold fast and the bait, especially tubes will corkscrew on the way down.

I'll often use a 3/4 oz. but have gone as high as 1 1/4.

Those tungsten screw in's are great.

If I'm fishing brush or wood I'll opt for 3/16-5/16 oz, usually un-pegged; if I'm fishing grass I'll opt for 3/8-3/4 oz. pegged.

My local lake is solid Salt Cedar with lots of water weeds growing in it.  I use 3/8 weights pegged so the weight and bait stay together and get down in the cover.

the best flippin weight (imo) is a penetrator tungsten.there are several reasons.the shape of it penetrates cover(grass) easier than other type and shapes.the hardness and slickness is the most important factor to a flippin weight.when a BIG bass bites a flipped bait it clamps down w/ tremendous force on the weight.w/ lead weights and some tungsten weights the force of the bite wont allow the grip of the teeth to slide down to the hook and if it does it to weak to make good penetration.result is a fish that you think is hooked but comes unbuttoned after a brief fight and is lost, when in many cases the fish was never hooked to begin with. it just had pressure on the weight.with the penetrator weight the fish cant clamp down on it and the shape allows the teeth to slide off to the hook.to each his own,but if you flip enough you'll find that some fish can be lost by the weight not seperating from the bait on the fight.especially w/ heavy weights.every flipper has to decide for himself what they want to use and be content with.i want every advantage i can get.i dont want any thing to fail if i get the 10+ on when flippin or any bass for that matter if im flippin in a tx.i never ,ever would use a screw in weight ,i would never peg a weight that even had a hard time seperating from the hook.no toothpicks or the such.i only use bobberstops.another thing i started doing a couple yrs. ago is to snell my hooks. it causes the hook to flip up to a 90 deg. angle when the bass clamps down on the weight .
