Would this be a good plastics rod? Its on clearence for the rod and reel and is only 50.00 bucks!

Long story short, I would say no, you can do better. Check your local Dick's Sporting Goods, they should have a sale on a Shimano Sedona 2500/ Convergence 6' 6" Medium combo for $45. That is a good, cheap, quality setup that can be used for almost anything. Right now, i would say that is the best setup for <$50.

If you are just beginning to fish, a spinning reel (sedona) is much easier to use than a baitcasting reel (Abu 6600). The Shimano combo is IMHO the way to go.

Im not realy sure but its 7 foor and is medium heavy. Is a big reel a big problem because im thinking I can put 17 pound line on it and use it for catfish and bass.

Even if you want to use the reel for catfish, you really don't need a 6600 size Abu. A reel that big would be very tiring to cast all day as well. If money is not a problem, you could get the Medium Shimano combo for bass and put 8 lb line on it and get a Heavy baitcasting combo to use for catfish and when fishing heavy cover for bass. What are you willing to spend??

Well I just saw this rod on clearence for 50 and its usualy 75 and had heard only good things about abu garcia so I thought id ask.

You are on the right track with what you heard, Abu reels are generally good for the $$$.  If you want to try one, I think the 4600 size is way under rated - casts very nice and is decent handling.

Yup, 4600 is the best size for the applications you plan on using it for. If you could get a 4600 instead of the 6600 on that rod, i think that would be a good start, but i would still recommend a spinning setup for lighter lures.

This combo will work great for catfish, and stripers, but it doesnt have a brake system besides the spool tension. If you have to make constant long casts you'll throw your arm, and back out in thirty minutes. If you can scrounge up a little more cash check out the catmax combos at bass pro. You can get a 7mh,or a 76h for $90.00 the reel has a six pin brake and it holds d**n near 200 yards of line.

Whatever you go with is up to you, I hope you get a chance to get your line wet, and hook up this weekend.

Would a medium heavy lightning rod go good on a spinning reel with braided line? If not I think I may get an abu black max I love the look of those things!

The 6000 series and up Garcia's are mostly light to medium saltwater reels. The 5000 series makes for great catfish reels. The 4000 series is the workhorse bass reel from Garcia. I would look at a quality low profile reel (Revo) and a medium or medium heavy power rod for bass fishing, always try to keep the bass systems light weight as possible.

A great outfit for salt water fishing but come on you don't need anything that big for cats or bass.
