Energy PT baitcaster

Featured Replies

Has anybody ever tried out Quantum's Energy PT baitcaster?

I'm looking to upgrade from my baitcaster, and that one looks awesome ;D. I read the Tackletour review, and they seem to like it.

Any advice/reviews?

I don't have nearly the experience of others on this forum, but I just bought an Energy PT a few weeks ago for $80. After 2 times out, I noticed that my line was frayed (kinda like a split end on hair). The 'grommet' where the line enters the level winder was split and it was catching my line. The Reel Mechanic tipped me off that it was a defect, and not part of the design. Brought it back to Dick's and received another no problem. Other than that, I like it a lot. It's very smooth, and I just like the feel and balance in my hand. I can't offer any info as to how long it will 'last'. Many of the guys here don't think highly of the Quantum's.

If you are talking about the one that is about to be replaced (kinda purple and green) they are nice reels. I've got 3 and my dad has one of my previous model ones. I've never had any problems with them and since all the adjustments can be made on the outside (no taking off the side plate) they are very adjustable.

As long as you still find them on sale I'd say go for it. There may be lighter reels out there but these have served me well for the past 2 years.

If you search around alittle you find a bunch of posts about them.

I added a picture so people know which one Im lookin at. Thanks for the advice so far and in advance.

A little follow up to Bassin_0502 post since he beat me to posting. Alot of guys think the Quantums are too heavy. Many people used Quantum reels many years ago an have not tried them since. Those seem to be the 2 biggest reasons for people not liking Quantum.

Don't let a few people scare you off if you like the reel and can get it around $80 or $90.

I just broke mine out of the box today and was doing fine until the third hour and then it started making a screeching sound at the end of long casts. Other than that I like it.

I bought mine for $80 earlier this summer and haven't had any problems with it yet. A great reel for the price i got it.

I have one of these and for the current price you can get them for (I think $80 - $90 range)  they are a fantastic buy.

I have two of these Energies (5.1:1 & 7:1) and like them alot. Yeah, they could be a little lighter but still a very good reel in my book.

OK Bass Hunter,

Your problems sounds like it just a matter of having the reel lubed with some good lubricants. I'm NOT a fan of the Hot Sauce. I understand you shouldn't have that issue only after 3 hours but like I said, with a good lubricant you won't have that issue.

Im not too big of a fan on the reel.I bought a E760PT.Started using it for about a week then took it back to Gander Mountain.Went to bass pro shop and asked some opinions.BPS said that reel isnt worth 110 the paintjob makes it round 179.Not a bad reel though.I wasnt too big on the adjusting of the tension on the spool, also was really touchy..I took it back and got my new real and im very happy. The reels i would check into Is the Abu Garcia Revos,Shimano Curado,or Pflueger President...

I have a couple. And if you read many posts on these reels, it seem that the factory lube job is the main issue with them. What I've found by reading the different opinions, is that it is best to open 'em up at new and relube them yourself and to make sure that you use the same hot sauce oil and grease that was used initially, or even better, clean all the hot sauce out of them (including the bearings), and doing the job with Abu Garcia lubricants.

However it's done, don't mix the brand of lubricants! The property differences in lubes mean they don't play well with each other.  This part, I believe, is explained somewhere by ReelMechanic.
