I was just curious if this is the right thing to do after a good day of fishing..  

Is it smart to wash it down with a hose after fishing freshwater?  I literally open up the hose and wash my reels/rods/ and hook/jig whatever after a day of fishing..

My pops told me to do this a while back after fishing saltwater.. but I was wondering if it's necessary in freshwater..

Also, I do lube up the spinning reels after a couple of uses.. any "maintenance" needed for a new baitcaster?  To be specific it's the shimano citica..

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your pops was right on. Rinse any gear (rod/reel) used in a salty environment each outing. Not necessary if the same gear is used in a freshwater environment.

Lubing a spinning reel is a whole bunch different then a baitcasting reel.

New fresh out of the box BC's, usually don't need anything for one season. But after that depending on whether the reels are transported protected or not, they will start to need servicing. You will notice a difference in the casting and some subtle changes in the way the reel/s adjust.

The basic maintenance of the reel is explained in the manual in the box. If you have never opened up a BC reel to service then I would recommend you don't. Contact a qualified service tech.

I remove my reels, and spray my rods off with the hose, spray some simple green on them, and spray again, then dry. And my reels, every 2 or so outings I take apart my reels and lube them. Gotta have your gear looking good, and working properly.
