Daiwa TD-Z

Featured Replies

I'm looking around for a Daiwa TD-Z (leftie) and would like to hear some user opinions; both the good and bad (if there is such a thing as bad with this reel). Any comments?

I can't speak specifically on the lefty version but I have 4 right handers and I love them.  Still one of the lightest reels out there. I have never had an issue with any of mine. They toss light lures well and also handle the heavier stuff well too.

I use the right handed version (mirror image of left) and don't have one complaint about it.  Plenty light enough, casts great, and is very versatile for many types of baits.  You will not be sorry.

I have both right and left handed including a lefty version of the flipping reel.

Light, strong, a pleasure.  Can't go wrong.

Awesome reels, I have three of them.  Modded drags and handles, of course. :)

Just wanted to say thanks for giving me some feedback. I was able to locate a 103ML Type R+ Limited on ebay and hope to have it soon.

Again, thanks.

I have a 103ML and absolutely love it.  Everyone has pretty much covered all the pros to the TD-Z.  The only con I can think of is I am not 100% impressed with the stock drag.  Other than that it's a sweetheart.

The TD-Z has soft plastics written all over it.  I have mine on a BCR852 GLX, and it's a match made in heaven.  The 103ML has an IPT of 24; this really helps me slow down and not overwork my rig, as I use the 852 for a lot of finesse work.   :)

Did you upgrade? Suggestions?

Not yet, it's on my short list. I have a few holes to fill in my arsenal.

If you want to do the job yourself, check out www.smoothdrag.com.  As far as the carbontex drag upgrade, Daiwa baitcaster set #1 should do the trick.

If you are not comfortable doing the upgrade, shoot forum member The Reel Mechanic a pm. :)
