Choosing a baitcatsing reel?/What do you look for when buying a bait caster?

Featured Replies

What do you look for when buying a bait caster? I'm rather new to bait casters and i've only bought one (to admit, it was not a much of good one). This is what I'm looking for currently:

- A good gear ration 6.2:1 or more

- At lest 7 ball bearings plus 1 or more roller bearings

- light wight and low profile

- a line capacity of at lest 110 yards of 12 lb test

And a Titanium line guide would nice. (not a necessity)

Is their any other important features I should look for?

By the way, I'm just using it for general LM bass fishing, and maybe some snook.

I'm looking to for a price range around $80.00 to $120.00

How much do you want to spend?

There are lots of good BCs out there.

Shimano

Abu Garcia

Daiwa

Quantum

Pflueger

to name a few.

I only look for one thing; the name Shimano.  From there I go for how much I want to spend and then I am done.

It is better to have less higher quality bearings than many low quality ones. A citica d has 3 bearings i think, but is still a great reel.

the number of ball bearings is way overrated.

the single most-important thing to me in this price range is a one-piece aluminum frame. the BCs with graphite frames may work and feel okay the first few times out or if you don't work 'em too hard but, after awhile, they get noisy and rough.

I would also look into one with a metal frame vs. graphite or plastic, especially if you'll be targeting snook. Never caught one myself but from what I've seen they look like pretty big critters! I've never had a graphite frame break but the one's I've had seem like they they weren't as quiet or smooth as reels with aluminum frame.
