Pflueger President Bait caster

Recommended Posts

Reel mechanic or anyone, can you tell me how to get the crank handle off a pflueger president.  It"s not made like any reel I have seen.  Also, where to get a schematic for it?

Thanks

I believe that crank just threads onto the shaft instead of being attached with the traditional nut to hold it on. As you turn the crank to reel in line you would always be turning it in the direction of tightening the threads so it would never come loose on you through use.

I think you can just crank it backwards againts the anti-reverse bearing and it should loosen up and come off, depending on how tight it is on there anyway. Every other reel I've ever seen that was made that way has the handle come off in that manner.

Then to retighten it again you'd have to have the drag fairly tight and hold the spool to keep it from turning while you crank the handle back on, turning it as if you were reeling in line.

Thanks Muddy and Rooster!

That is what I needed.  It looked like that would have to be the way it came apart, but without knowing I was afraid to put enough pressure on it.  Afraid I would strip a gear or something.

When you apply pressure, I'd keep it on the metal bar that the crank paddles are attached to instead of just using the paddles themselves. It might be on there pretty tight and the paddles might be bent out of position before the threads give. Also look to see if there's any sort of set screw that would have to be loosened before you just crank it backwards. It would be on the part of the reel handle where it threads onto the shaft. If there's not then it should be good to go, but if there is then it will have to be loosened to remove the handle. I'm fairly sure there's not though.

I just ordered a reel made this same way, it's the Bass Pro Shops Rick Clunn signature series, also made by Pflueger. I'll have this same thing to go through when I need to clean and relube it next year. But I've taken reels like this apart before and they've always just been the type to crank in reverse to remove the handle.
