Gear Ratio for Cranking

Featured Replies

What is the general gear ratio you want for fishing crankbaits?

Thanks

you want a slow gear ratio for cranking in my opinion a 5.2.1 speed is really good for cranking.

Low ratio = power.

High ratio = speed.

A 5:1 can be outstanding for crankbaits.

I love my new Curado E5 but I throw cranks on various reel ratios.

The secret is in the line.  Use 17-pound mono.

And swing rod to left or right when setting a treble hook bait.

Just some suggestions.

If your going to accasionaly be burnin' em go with a 6.4:1, and that will get you versatility with other baits.  If not and your going to have a specific reel for cranks go with the the slower 5 ratios.

5.2:I for lipped cranks .

6.4: for rat-l-traps.

5.2:I for lipped cranks .

6.4: for rat-l-traps.

I also like faster reel for lipless cranks.

Best slower reel out there is the Zillion Crazy Cranker.

DT-Sol is a fine unit for cranking as well.

5:1 Curado for cranks

6.3:1 Curado for lipless cranks

17# test mono? Now that's a new one! Mind explaining why?

I was gonna buy a 5:1 ratio reel just for crankbaiting, but I think a 6:1 will be just fine aslong as your not doing deep divers. I think you can get away with up to 12 feet and with a 6:1, you can use it for other techniques as well.

People keep telling me, its easier to slow down a reel than it is to speed up.
