I am thinking black wood stain if there is such a stain in black.  Another option is a large black Sharpie, but I don't know if it would come off.

If you dye it and then use some cork sealer, you'll probably be able to keep it from bleeding.

where would you get that ? , at a craft store ???

You can get stain for wood at any Lowes or Home Depot.  All you need to do is find the stain that matches the color you want to use.

You probably won't need too much and you might need 3-4 coat applications.  Just make sure you start with clean cork.

Walnut or Spanish walnut might be the closest to black. These days, they just might have black.

Lastly, you might want to use painter's tape to cover areas of the rod you don't want stain. It will eliminate any need to clean.

Get a pair of latex gloves and a rag or paint brush to apply the stain.

Seems to me dye may make the cork slick, can't understand the reason for doing it in the first place.  I clean my cork grips with denatured alcohol, makes em like new.

Back in the 80's when I was in High School I worked at Sherwin Williams Paint. We sold black wood stain in semi transparent and sold. I think it came in a quart or even smaller, Check at the specialty paint stores.

yeah , gonna try the process on a cork board or something similar . i might even call up a company that colors cork ( flooring , furniture , etc. ) there has to be a ''RIGHT WAY'' to do this !! the all black Powell rod(s) will look sweet , and to top it off , an ABU GARCIA SX reel  ;)
