Quick braid question

Recommended Posts

I just got a Daiwa Tierra 2500 and plan on putting powerpro on it.  I can't decided between the better casting performance of 15# and the improved strength of 20#.  What would you recommend for a rod that will be used for a lot of soft plastic baits.  Thanks.

On a spinning reel I would not go much larger then 10 lb braid. A Med Fast Rod would be a good choice for soft plastics.

Nice reel........

The answer is not cut and dried as to the braid ( I use braid exclusively).  Depends on where you will be fishing and how heavy the cover is and what you are fishing for. In open water I go with 10# braid, moderate cover I go 15#.....personally for bass I never saw the need for 20#.  I'd go ( brand of choice) 6-12 line rated rod or 8-14 line rated, little bit better spine to it.  I use those 2 rods for my freshwater on similar size reels.  I use a leader, generally 20#.

I use the similar set up for snook.

I use 30#-40# braid with 2000 and 2500 size spinning reels. I go by the line diameter, not the strength. Most 30# braids have an 8# mono equivalent diameter.

the thinner the braid, the more problem line digging will be (that's when the line digs into itself on the spool when wound under tension). i've used 15 lb. braid on my 2500-size spinning reels and it wasn't good.

btw, make sure you either put some electrical tape around your spool or some mono backing before winding on your braid or you will get slipping.

I'm exclusively braid.  I enjoy 10 lb suffix on my 2000 Tierra.  When I have problems it is never the braid breaking.  There is always something else that fails first.  Leader breaking at the leader knot, or just 2 days ago I straightened a clasp and a 6lb got away just feet from the boat.  The 10 lb braid held fine.  But I'm done with clasps.

I bought my wife a Shimano Stradic 2500 and put 30# Power Pro on it.  I mounted it on a St Croix 6'6" MF Avid spinning rod.  One day I fished with it and liked it so much that I bought the same setup for me.  I use it exclusively for plastics.
