Hey everyone, I have a couple quick questions regarding the use of braid on a baitcaster. I just got my first baitcaster and had it loaded with 12lb mono. Took it out his morning and managed to use it and catch fish without too many problems but I do prefer to fish with braid. My question is, will changing it to braid cause more birds nests? And, if I do change, do I need to back it with mono like you do with spinning reels? Oh yeah, I was thinking maybe 20-25lb braid. I appreciate the input!  

Personally, i found using braid to work in baitcasters just fine, i actually have less bird nest problems with the braid. and i do use mono for filler just because braid is pretty expensive so you don't have to use as much.

i have less backlashes with braid as well. not only that they are much much easier to pick out. i don't back it with mono and it works fine

For bass fishing a 1/3 to 1/2 spool of braid is plenty. Just pull off enough mono to make room and then fill with the braid. You may have enough left over to do another reel or two. The braid will last for years or until you retie enough to get down to the connection knot on a cast.

I spool mine up with 135 yrds of braid, the only problem is you get a knot with braid and it's a nightmare for me over mono. The 25lbs should be fine,

Braid works great for some bait casting applications, mainly fishing jigs for me. One sugestion is go heavyer than 25lb test. The thin 25 lb line will dig into its self on a good hook-set and cause you problems. I learned the hard way, and now use 50 lb and no more line digging and binding in the spool. The bigger diameter line is also easyer to untangle if you have a mishap. Good luck, enjoy the feel of braid.

Not using backing works when there is a lot of line on the spool.  As soon as the line starts going down you will get more backlashes.

I would recommend putting backing on.  It might just save you some trouble down the road.

As far as braid for baitcasters. I use Sufix Performance Braid 30 lb.  I will never ever use anything else that is currently out on the market.  I have found it works best.  I like Power Pro on spinners, but it doesnt spool nice on casters.  Sufix is a limper braid than most out there.

braid backlashes less IMHO.. and when it does its muchhhhh easier to pick them out.. but some times it can be a pain in the @@@ if you use to thin of braid and it will dig in to its self... I would used no less then 30LB even 30 will still dig in some 40 and up it wont hardly do it at all.
