Reel choice

Featured Replies

I have used a Shimano sedona in the past and was happy with it, used an Abu Garcia and was not impressed.

I will use a mixture of, jigs, worms, and some crankbait. I will mainly shoot for bass, and some catfish, carp as well. Bait will change upon the persuit toward the cat, and carp.

The line of choice will be Stren original of around 10Lbs.

These are my choices as they are in my price range for a reel.

Shimano - Spirex sr4000

Penn - Captiva 25000

They are close in the reel in ratio, but the Penn looks to dominate in the ball bearing category. Though i'm not sure if the extra would compare to the Shimano in quality.

I appreciate your input, advise, and help.

Thank you,

Andrew

definitely go with the shimano

In this case get the Shimano. Penns are not Penns of yesteryear. Captivas are made in china and lack the quality of traditional Penns. I had, until it fell apart a captiva, 5000.

I'm not up on my prices but for about 29 or 39 bucks a Pflueger trion is real touch to beat and a president at 59 would even be better. Never get tricked into thinking the more bearings the better the reel.

Thanks for the responese, yes both are around 59.99 give or take depending where your purchasing. Looks like the Shimano it is. I will look at the Pflueger also.

I stopped by cabella's and looked over the Spirex 4000, and the Pflueger President. I really liked the President. The only thing that I did not like on the Spirex was no anti-reverse.

I was going to pair it up with a Shimano clarus rod, those are nice. over my budget but safe to say I will stay around $130 for both.

I like the Sahara option, now to look at a rod, tomorrow I will drive over to Bass Pro Shop.

Any more suggestions?

Check out & play with the Shimano, but do NOT ignore Pflueger. And check Abu's as well (Cardinal 500/700 series). I have found Pfluegers and the new AG Cardinals to be phenomenal.
