Trailor Hooks on Frogs

Featured Replies

Late this year, I started using a small red trailer hook on my frogs and hook up percentage increased substantially.  I'm throwing the SKLCo Rage Toads and and Shad and trailer doesn't affect the action at all. Am I by myself on using trailer hooks on frogs or are some of you folks doin it too?

Mmmm if your talkin about horny toad's and ribbit's then I never have used a trailer, and rarely ever miss a fish on them either.  but it sound's like a good idea.

me either. besides i could never use a trailer, because the areas i fish a frog is always HEAVILY vegetated.

Did you know that one of the best ways to make a trailor on these kind of baits is to use a treble(#2?) and cut off one hook to make a double hook. Then attatch it to your 4/0-6/0 in trailer hook fashion using a small piece of tubing to secure it.After determining the correct size treble to use skin hook the two points in the rear of the frog body at the base of the legs. You now have a bait that is just as weedless and will increase hook ups to nearly 100%. Only downfall? The baits will be redendered torn and useless sooner.

I have done this with Yum,Ribbit,Sizmic, and Gambler Cane with success.I'll post a picture later when I have time though.

like boca, I want my frog completely weedless.  I use an #5 ewg hook with screw in keeper and never set the hook on sight.  If I have a strike I kill it and wait for my line to move before I set the hook.  I dont miss 1 out of 20.

A trailer hook on a frog?

Interesting.

I put a trailer hook on a topwater frog but not one that I plan to fish over or through the grass.

Have caught bass with a trailer hook on a topwater frog.  The trailer hook seems to help with my hook-up ratio when fishing frogs.

Never used one. If I am fishing a frog, it is usually in some heavy cover and I want to be totally weedless. I would think you would get snagged constantly.
