Looking for opinions on my plan of attack

Recommended Posts

I have a few different rigs that I bring for LM fishing, usually in small ponds. Here is what I'm throwing at them:

-Quantum Tour edition PT on a ST Croix Sport Triumph 6'6" MH Fast  Action. I am thinking of respooling with Sufix Elite 12# mono and using this for frogs and big topwater only.

-Quantum Accurist on a Cabelas IM7 6'6" ML (8-17lb). I have Seaguar Carbon Pro #12 on this rig and this is my workhouse rig for spin bait, rapalas, cranks and some smaller topwaters and even Paca Craw foot ball jigs.

-Plueger President spinning combo 6'6" M rod with 15# Power Pro braid. This has been my frog and T-rig set up exclusively. I like the  sensitivity of braid for soft plastics, but I'm leery of braid in deeper waters.

My issues are: I have a hard time throwing 1/4 oz rapalas and such on the Accurist, perhaps my technique is crappy or my line is too heavy who knows? I am thinking of adding another Accurist (BPS sale) and setting it up for even lighter bait.

What do you guys think of my approach? I am set to do some more big lake fishing this year and I want to make sure I'm dialed in.

Here is my 2 cents. I would set up a little different. I would take the Tour/Truimph combo and use it for soft plastics, jig, and 1/2oz spinerbaits. This would probably be my main setup. I would spool the reel up 12lb fluoro or braid and if you are fishing in clear water use a fluorocarbon leader.

And I would use the spinning outfit for finesse presentation. small jigs, shakeyheads/drops shots/ and weightless worms. This rod doesnt have enough backbone for serious frog fishing. Here I would spool w/ 8lb flourocrabon.

The other outfit (the ML) I would use for small cranks and topwater. In the future I would try to get a 7' H stick for the quantum accurist for frog, big worms, and big football jigs.

OK,  I took your advice djmax and the combo is working well. I picked up a Citica 200d so I'm still debating what the best combination of rigs would be for what I have left:

Quantum Accurist

Citica 200D

6'6" Cabelas IM7 M rod

Thinking of adding a St Croix 7' Premier for either the Citica or Quantum. Whats the best fit? The Citica seems large, so my gut feeling is to rig that with the 7' rod for frogs, big worms,  big jigs. Use the Quantum with the 6'6" Cabelas for topwater,  smaller lures? Am I on the right path?

Here is what I would do if I only had those rigs....

Tour PT/Triumph MH- 15lb Trilene 100% fluorocarbon. Jigs/C-rigs/buzzbait/frogs/Spinnerbaits/heavier T-rigs.

Accurist/Cabelas IM7 ML- 10-12lb Trilene fluorocarbon. Cranks, finesse soft plastics (<1/8oz), topwaters, and finesse spinnerbaits (1/4oz of less...dynamite right after the fish leave their beds)

M spinning setup- 10lb fluorocarbon. Most all soft plastics and jerkbaits (hard and soft)

Thanks!

I think I'm in total agreement so far. With the Tour/Triumph and the Accurist/Cabelas set, what rod would be ideal in my situation for the Citica? I'm thinking 7' Avid,  whatever I can afford....MH perhaps for larger presentations also a rig I can use in muck and heavy cover. Does that make sense?

OK, I have an update on my plan of attack, still looking for opinions from the seasoned pros:

Took the advice and here is what I have so far:

Quantum PT Burner/St Croix Triumph 6'6" MHF 12 lb Seaguar flouro - this is my spinning rig,  love it.

Quantum Accurist/Cabelas IM7 6'6" M Moderate tip - 12 lb Seaguar flouro - this is now my crankbait rig  and topwater rig. I will replace the flouro with mono I think at some point so top water is more effective.

Shimano Citica/St Croix 7' Mojo Bass MHF - 10 lb. Pline CXX (came with the reel) - I have been using this for Texas Rig and 1/4 oz jig heads.

Pflueger President combo spinning with Power Pro braid,  been using for Rapalas, smaller crankbaits. I will eventually switch to flouro or mono.

Quantum Accurist - I just bought this reel in the Flea Market and my goal is set up an exclusive Texas Rig rig, with perhaps another 7' St Croix MH.

Does this make sense? Any other ideas considering my plan of attack?

I agree with The Natural. Except use 12# Yo-Zuri Hybrid on anything your going to throw topwaters on.
