anyone ever tried the 7x7 steel leader wire. it ties just like regular fishing line. no crimps. it comes in black or camo but is very expansive. 30 ft (yes i said 30 ft. not 30 yards) cost  about $20 for 13 lb test. i use it where there are alot of fish with teeth.

I use Yamamoto's wire leader. It is expensive, but spend money for leaders is better than spend for new tackel

Never tried these. If I'm using a steel leader (when I'm musky fishing) I use Berkley's Steel-on steel leaders. Other options that you can look into are hard mono or flurocarbon leaders. I use 80# hard mono and 65# fluro (both for muskies as well) and haven't had any problems there either.

I haven't attempted to make any personally, but my fishing partner does. We'll split the cost of the materials and he ties them up for us. I have yet to have a leader that he has tied fail on me!

I make all my own leaders for barracda.  I'm suspect of the swivels and snaps from storebought ones.

I use coated wire 30# or 40#(can't remember off the top of my head), the loops and swivles are attached with crimpers, then sqeeze them shut with a crimping pliers.

I make and attach separate leaders to each and every lure I use.

Never tried the tieable.

We're the same way with the store bought ones, although the Berkley Steel-On have been the most reliable that I have used on the store bought side. I can't remember for sure, but one of the materials (I "think" it was a braid) we used would not take a crimp to save its life. My buddy even contacted one of the companies and asked them. He ended up tying them on (with a Jansik Special Knot, I believe) and it worked great that way.

When pike fishing I use P - Line CFX fluorocarbon leaders in at least 15 pound test. I catch some BIG pike and seldom get cut off. Wire interfers too much with lure action and just repels strikes. However if the water is heavily stained, tieable wire is a good option.

Sorry, how big fish do you fish?  

If you fish where I fish getting cut off can be an everyday experience.

Hard to say what average fish weight is, depends on what's  running.

With barracuda wire is a must. With pike, pickeral, or musky, heavy fluorocarbon will prevent MOST bite offs, but you may still lose a few.

That's why my advice is the following: you should always use wire leader. You shouldn't lose the time. Maybe it's a time of catchin the biggest fish in your life.
