My wife and I just got us some kayaks and she is wanting a rod and reel to carry with her. Most of the time we will fish for bass but sometimes we will fish some mashes along the coast. I have got a couple of reels but I need a good quality spinning rod that will hold 8-12 lb test for under $50.00.

The Walmart Berkley Cherry rods are half that and are eminently fishable. If you want to spend the full $50, the BPS Bionic Blade is frequently onsale under $50. It is a much better rod than the Cherrywood but how much your wife would be able to distinguish is the question.

Absolutely concur, I have one and love it, just grabbed another for myself and one for a family member.  Now i just need a reel to go with it , maybe next year, I think I've blown my fishing budget for 09.

A thinking man would let her use your least favorite rod.  If/when she breaks it you'll be in position to sympathetically reply "That's OK honey, accidents happen.  I'll get another one."  Then UPGRADE!
