After all of my questions recently about what to get for my first baitcaster, I think I have decided on the Curado 201 E7. It will be used as an all around reel but mainly for soft plastics, spinners, and jigs. Also, I would like to pair this reel with a Loomis MBR784 IMX as the 783 felt a bit underpowered when I had my hands on it in my local Cabela's the other day, and they are both rated for baits as light as 1/4 oz. What do you guys think of this combo for a beginner for these applications? Thanks to eveyone for all of your help.

I'm sure I will add to the collection over the next two years, but the plan is that I wont need to upgrade

The combo you selected will be great.  Get the best you can get, it will help make your fishing experience more enjoyable.

I messed up and started from he bottom up! I ended up replacing A LOT of gear! Now i will buy exactly what i want the first time.

If you are mostly throwing 1/4-3/8oz. stuff then the 783 will be fine; anything heavier and you can't go wrong with the 4 power. I have the 783 and use it for most of my spinnerbaits and topwater.

My spinners are mostly 1/2 and 3/8 oz but I would like the ability to throw 3/4 too. I just could not imagin throwing a 3/4 oz spinner, or any 3/4 oz bait, on the 783 after having it in my hands. On the other hand, I usually throw light plastics. Either weightless or texas rigged with a 1/8-1/4 oz bullet weight because I don't fish very deep waters and I like the slower fall rate. I realize that I am asking a lot of just one rod. Guess I will just have to get the BCR803 GLX for my plastics fishing  :

The problem is that I already own an SJR843 IMX so I'm afraid I may never own anything less than IMX again  :-/. The way I look at it though is a Loomis rod is a lifetime investment and well worth the money with their great warranty and expeditor service. A reel on the other hand is a different story. I don't think I could ever see myself spending $300+ on a reel with so many complicated moving parts that can fail in so many different places.

Well it's official. I pulled the trigger and bought the combo tonight. Got the IMX from TW while their Labor Day sale was still goin on for $230 shipped and the Curado from a trusted seller on ebay that I have bought from before for $148 shipped. Also picked up a spool of fireline braid from TW for $16. In a week or so I will be the proud owner of a Curado 201 E7 mounted on an MBR784c IMX. Can't wait to teach myself the art of the baitcaster and get out on the water

Congrats on the new combo, Craiger!  There's not much better than a new setup.  I would highly recommend spooling up with mono until you are comfortable with the new reel.  One solid professional overrun with braid could cost you a good chunk of change. Braid can be a biatch to dig out.

I plan to spool it with 12lb trilene big game, which I use as my backing line, for practice before I put the braid on.

Im with quitlimpin on this one, start with some mono or if you want the extra strength, go for the Gamma CoPolymer, their 10lb is equal to 15lbs of breaking, and the 12lb is rated at 17.5lbs, and that braid is not fun when you overrun. just an idea.

That'll be a sweet setup Craiger. If you want to use braid, the higher diameter stuff (50lb and higher) is a peace of cake to get out of a birds nest.

I bought 40# so that is what I will use once I get my practice in with mono for a while.

40 should be fine as well.
