Keep it clean Muddy, Avid, Long Mike, and LBH. ;)

I know what you're thinking.

OOooooh,...cut off at the pass,lol....PM, Avid, he'll spoon with ya ;D

Truth is, this is a question I am interested in also.  I need to go find the ones that are staying deep after ice out.

I'll let Triton Mike know about this one. I think he just wrote an article about it for Inside Line. He'd be glad to come on and give what he knows about deep spooning. (40+ feet)

Fluke, the honey hole has a max depth of 32 ft.  One place, the wide open area of the lake (was the original farm pond before flooding).  Would this stuff still apply?

Yes.

Max depth of Varner is like 30 ft and Randall catches them with spoons all winter long and all over the lake.

Fishing jigging spoons and blade baits is my favorite way of fishing (okay, so I'm crazy).  Cold water, deep (25' to 35') bass, and schooling bass situations always brings out my spooning rods.  I use both casting and spinning 6' rods, either a baitcaster or spinning reel works just fine (but the reels should have no back play when setting the hook), and either 10lb or 8lb fluorocarbon line is best.  And knowing your electronics is key to good spooning.  Bottom line is, it all comes down to feel, and this can't be learned from articles, only time on the water.

Below are a couple of good articles on jigging spoons, and although some are geared at walleye, the information also works for bass.

Lets break this down into spoon categories;

Surface spoons like Johnson Silver minnow with weedless hook the rides upright.

Casting spoons the are designed to wobble when retrieved horizontally, like Daredevil and Krokadile spoons.

Verticle structure spoons that are designed to fall down through the water column with a dieing baitfish action.

Vetricle swimming jigs, like ice jigs.

Verticle weighted blades, like Silver Buddy.

The horizontal casting spoons can be used any time bass are targeting surface or shallow baitfish.

The verticle spoons and lures are better suited for deeper water presentations where you can lower the lure down to suspended bass and baitfish schools.

To properly fish the structure spoons, you need to learn how to read your sonar unit to locate bass or rely on birds to find baitfish schools. The structure spoon is simply lowered down to the depth the bass are holding and jigged up and down through the baitfish or feeding bass. Tackle should be med/light action and your drag needs to be set about 2 to 3 lbs to prevent ripping the hook out of the basses mouth tissue.

If you are going to be fishing deeper than 35 feet, you need to read up on how to "fizz" the basses air bladder.

After reading the above basics, come back with a specific question about one of the above and we can focus on that presentation in more detail.

If you are asking about vertical jigging spoons in deep water (the deepest water I ever fish is 20 feet) I'm interested in finding out how it's done.

the only think i ever catch with spoons are snags... ;)
