7.0:1 Gear Ratio

Featured Replies

I want to pick up 2 core 50's. One for spinnerbaits and one for crankbaits/trebles. The thing that is making me hesitate is the 7.0 gear ratio for my crankbaits. Last year i used a E5 and i found it too slow.

Is anyone using a 7.0 for spinnerbaits or trebles???

An E5 is a 5.0 ratio.  7.0 (which would be an E7) is a lot faster than it.

I'm not sure how a 7.0 is for crankbaits.  I think of them as being fished on slower retrieves so they dive deeper.

The IPT on the Core 50mg7 is 28" (if memory serves) while the IPT on the Citica E is 27".  The Curado E5 IPT is 21" while the E7 is 30".

Where can i find the ipt for shimano reels???

a 7.0:1 will completely ware you out after a day of fishing with it.  i use a 5.0:1 for my crankbait setups.  the lower gearing gives you more power and a slower speed.  you will be fighting the crankbait alot with the higher gear ratio

also my 5.0:1 reel is a shimano calais and it only pulls in 17" per crank i believe since i noticed you were talking about the line taken up.  i personaly love the speed for crankbait applications.

I haven't used the Core 50, but I have used the high speed Revo STX. I didn't like it for deep diving crankbaits or large bladed spinnerbaits because it wore me out cranking them in. It was fine for smaller bladed spinners and I liked it for burning lipless crankbaits.

I use a 7:1 for spinners and lipless cranks, I like it, just have to slow down a bit.
