Reels in box vs. plastic packaging

Is there any difference in the quality of a reel that is sold in plastic vs. box? I have a guy selling symetre reels for $50 new in plastic.

Is this just a way of packaging for big box stores, to hang on the racks?

My guess would be yes. I got a Pflueger President spinning reel on sale at Walmart that was in a plastic wrap. I've seen them in boxes also.

used to be the boxes had an extra spool and instructions and even some lube. Now Shimano doesn't give much of anything like that for free. Not even a box!
