I have a friend who wants to get his first baitcast reel and he wants to keep it in the $70-90$ range. I pretty much have Shimano Citica's on up and this would probably be out of his price range. I noticed the BPS Pro Qualifier was on sale for 80$, is this a good one? Thanks

Look into the new Quantum Accurist PT reels.  The lefties are available in 6.3:1 and 7.0:1, include a flippin' switch, they're nice and small, all-aluminum frame and sideplates, metal star drag, and fel really nice in the hand.

Great reel and great value for it's regular $100 price - an outstanding value at $80. It's available in LH and RH in 4 ratios (4.7, 5.2, 6.4, 7.1).  It has dual braking - a nifty feature not found on any other reels in it's price range. Search this forum for Pro Qualifier or "PQ" and you'll get lots of threads about this reel.

Bias disclosure: At present, I own 5 of the latest model PQs...

You could almost predict the Brand X reel a great deal for $90 or less, works great for a while, then craps out, and now your buddy finally buys a Citica or equivalent Daiwa. Take that $90 already spent plus the $119 for the citica and shoot, he could have gotten a curado and nearly a Chronarch.

This is why I suggest saving the extra $$ for the Citica.  'Tis a lesson not worth learning.

or find an older model of it on ebay for even less. i have two and they are awesome.

jfranco turned me onto a daiwa reel a few weeks back and i got one off ebay for $27 shipped. it is a great great reel and i cant wait to buy a rod to put it on . (baitmonkey....you listening?)

I agree with quantum accurist.  I have 3 (2 PT's), they are great reels, I see a bunch on ebay for even less than your budget.  BTW the flippin switch is great for someone learning to use a baitcaster because (if you turn it on) if you life your thumb off the button, the spool stops, it is kind of an added insurance, you can just stop the spool by releasing you thumb.

The Dual Brakes of the PQ might be less discouraging to a first time using of baitcasting gear.  The Revo S is a great reel, but not as friendly to the BC novice.
