Need some help - Shimano Symetre FJ 4000 (Front Drag)

Featured Replies

Guys - I bought this reel last year and haven't used it a ton till here lately. Its worked fine until the last few times I used it. I have 20lb braid on the spool with a 8lb leader of flouro tied onto the end. I have been fishing weightless senko's and noticed that my drag was not engaging correctly. After I cast out the senko, I would at times try and pull some slack off the reel after the bail was closed thinking that the drag would kick in and give me some tension. Well it didn't, the line just stripped right off with no resistance. I then stripped a lot of line off and put some tension back on the line and the drag worked. I don't really understand what's happening. Maybe I have too much line on the spool? I have no idea. Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks

Braid will sometimes slip and you think it's your drag going bad , it's not. use a backing (mono)then fill the spool up the rest of the way with your braid.

I have a Sahara 4000 which I've used for several years now. Not experiencing that kind of problem? I have 2 other smaller sized Symetres as well.

I agree with Bass-Brat IF you did not use a backing on the spool. If you do have a mono backing (or anything other than braid), then I'd have to say something is wrong with your drag washers. Try disassembling the spool. Clean and lightly oil the washers and reassemble. If that don't do it, I'd be very surprised.

You've got a fine reel there. You really shouldn't be experiencing these kind of problems.

I agree except for putting oil on drag parts. Use a grease specifically for drags. Shimano and Cal's for example.

Thanks for the input guys.  I pulled the braid off and put a backing line on it.  Going fishing tomorrow and will let you know if that fixed it.

i think i've had the same problem your talking about on my sahara,  i also use braided line, i took off the spool, there was some dirt, cleaned it up and it worked fine again.

Problem fixed.  We caught 29 today 1 5lb and 1 4lb.  The rest were small.  Good day for 15 - 25 mph wind gusts and muddy water!  Thanks for the help guys!
