Rod for Shimano Calcutta 50B Reel?

Featured Replies

Picked up a Shimano Calcutta 50B baitcasting reel in the offseason. Looking for a decent rod to go with it. I'm mainly a weekend fisherman, with bass being the main target. Any advice for a rod to accompany the reel?

What do you plan on throwing with it, I use mine for slow rolling spinner baits or change rods & throw a light Texas or wacky rigs.

The heaviest would probably be 1/2-3/4 ounce spinnerbaits, but I'd like to go lighter as well with crankbaits and plastic worms like you mentioned. What has your experience been, how light can you go with a reel like that?

With the centrifugal brakes/cast control properly setup and mounted on a quality rod I can easily throw a Wacky Rigged Zoom Trick Worm with a 1/0 hook, Stanley 1/8 oz spinner bait, or a 1/8 oz Rat-L-Trap.

I've had mine on a Allstar Classic for years... love it... it's versatile... bass- catfish-seatrout-redfish-even striper...

Appreciate the feedback here guys, thanks! Do you think I can get away with a smallmouth-like setup - maybe 1/16th oz jig and grub? Or is that just going too light, and dealing with bird's nests all the time?

I have an old Calcutta 51, and it's a lot of fun to cast.  I use mine on a cranking rod, and am quite happy.  I think this reel shine with cranks, and slow-rollin' blades.

Not sure about 1/16oz jig and plastic...maybe with the right rod and a big plastic trailer.
