What fluoro is closest to XPS fluoro?

Recommended Posts

For two years I have thrown my soft plastics on XPS 12lb-20lb fluoro but I am tired of ordering from BPS then waiting 2+ weeks for the stuff to arrive (it always takes a least a week for them to "process" the order) and paying huge shipping costs.  I always bought the big 800-1000 yard spools of the stuff which would last all year.  I am looking for a 12-14lb fluorocarbon that is as sensitive as the XPS and comes in bulk spools.  I go through too much line to keep buying the boutique lines in 120 yard spools.

I tried the Seaguar Abrasx and while it was limp and manageable it was nowhere near as sensitive (in 12lb, the 20lb was much more sensitive).  The Trilene 100% fluoro was decent but still not as sensitive.  I even tried the Sunline Sniper FC and I didn't think that stuff was as sensitive as the XPS (but it was better than the Seaguar and Trilene) and it was wayyyy too expensive to use as my primary line.

Anyone have any other recommendations?  I am buying the smaller spools to test these lines out but I would love to find one sooner rather than later so that I don't end up wasting money and accumulating half-used spools that I will never use again.  I am going to try out the PLine fluorocarbon (I always liked their fluoroclear for moving baits) this weekend but if that fails I am running out of ideas.  Also if it is available at *** that would be ideal (free shipping!).

go with seaguar invizx.  It's more manageable than abrazx.  I only use abrazx in heavy cover or areas where there are lots of rocks and you could get hung up easily.  Other than that go with invizx.

if you want a FC that is very sensitive you want Sunline Shooter or Seaguar Tatsu both are VERY high dollar lines but IMHO worth it and thats the only two FC I will fish other then Toray Solaroam Upgrade that I use for cranking. the other two I use for worms/jigs and flukes. I carry 25 setups on my boat I have FC on 6 on them and mono on 2 and braid on the rest. On most of my braid setups I use Daiwa Samurai Braid with Megabass Dragon call FC top shot. if you have never tried top shoting you dont know what your missing.. braid/FC top shot is amazing its the best of both worlds.

If you dont mind spending the cash on the lines I just told you then you will be spoiled and not want to fish anything else.

I definitely don't want to spend that kind of $ since I fish too often and change line too often to invest in that level of gear.  Also my wife is 4 months pregnant so fishing tackle expenditures are sure to be cut down going forward.  Again I am looking for a 12lb fluoro in bulk spools with sensitivity comparable to that of XPS 12lb.

the Suffix 100% FC is pretty sensitive to just slightly high dia. but if you dont mind that then that might be the line for you!

Is the Suffix as thick as the Vicious fluorocarbon?  I hated that stuff, it was like fishing with pasta!

Is the Invisx more sensitive than the abrazx?

I haven't tried abraxz yet, but I can tell you that to me invizx does a superb job of transmitting feedback to me.

I realize that the perception of sensitivity is awfully subjective and completely dependent on the person but I really like Invizx's performance and traits such as being limp too.

I don't think I'd be as concerned about the sensitivity as I would be about the memory issues.  I'm not sure I can tell a major diff in the sensitivity of most of the major brands of FC lines.

Yes I use Shooter on a couple of my BC rigs for lipless & deep cranks, as well as light TR & CR < 1/2oz.I also have some XPS & some P-line. I do notice a big diff in the memory between the lines. All my spinning outfits are spooled with Braid and FC leaders when needed.

I know you didn't mention which type of reels you're using. Another factor is using a good line conditioner such as KVD's.

So, which type of reels & what applications are you using.

I am going to need this for texas rigs primarily.  I fish texas rigs with a 7' Loomis GLX MH jig and worm rod with a new Curado (fishing deep or grass edges, used 90% of the time), or on my 6'6" JB Custon MH "Snake" with a zillion reel (around docks or when pitching to close cover).  I always use KVD line and lure conditioner the night before so that the line is manageable.  The XPS line is stiffer than all the others I have tried which to me transmits sensation far better.  I can deal with some line memory since I usually have very little slack in my line unless I am fishing a drop off or fishing deep but even then I hold the line with my fingers when reeling up the slack so it stays on tight.

For jigs/carolina rigs/punching I am throwing 20lb fluoro and I had good results with the Abrasx but the 12lb Abrasx was nowhere near as sensitive as the XPS.  For most crankbaits I throw PLine fluoroclear in 12lb since it has some stretch but sinks (I use 12lb fluoro for lipless cranks as it rips them from grass better than the stretchier hybrid).

You aren't going to find a better price/performance combo than XPS.  Bite the bullet.  Order it in spring when it's on sale and throw in other fishing stuff you need for the coming summer season.

Try Seaguar Red Label.  It's their low end, so it should be less manageable (more stiff).  Make sure you get comparable line diameters (not weights).  You also need to make sure the other lines you've tried you have comparable line diameters as well.

FWIW..10lb AbrasX isn't all that around rocks..had a really nice lure break off today. It got stuck, I thought I could pop it out with a slight tug, and snap goes the line.

I also use InvisX, I see No difference between the 2 re: sensitivity. And I use these lines for DS'n, and all plastics. if you need a line that's so sensitive, use some braid witha fluro leader.. ;)

I have fished a bunch of fluorocarbon and a search will turn up the threads.  P-line was my favorite until I found XPS.  In my book, P-line is the closests your going to find to XPS in the sensitivity category.  For me I pick XPS every time though it is a pain to have to order the bulk spool.

that vicious stuff is a joke lol...The Suffix is much thinner then it is... just a little thicker then like berkley 100% and invisX...but its a very sensitive line and it doesnt turn milky!!! also very very low memory on all lines up to 20# and its very supple to!

Its the only FC my Dad will fish

No, it is made by Toray to Bass Pro's specifications.

I believe SeaGuar makes Cabela's FC line as toray does for BPS.

XPS has been my favorite. My brother swears by Inivizx. Dont buy Vicious. Bought some earlier this year. I used it once and came home an threw all of it away. Vicious is easily the worst line that I have ever used.

Isn't the Arundel Mills BPS still open? Why not just drive over there and pick itup? Save you the heart attack of waiting for it to be sent from Missouri. ;)

I have been doing a survey of various forums and the two names which come up most often as reasonably priced excellent floro are InvizX and Berkley Trilene 100% Floro.  The latter surprised me, but it is getting rave comments from users.  Not many like Berkely Vanish.

I was there last week and they don't have the bulk spools of 12lb. only 6 and 20.

I have spooled up one rod with PLine Fluorocarbon and another set up with Gamma Edge 12lb.  Hopefully one of these two will meet my specs so I can order a bunch of it.  If not I will give the Berkley another shot and then probably go back to the XPS reluctantly.
