Which Shimano Reel is Better?

Featured Replies

I went to a local store to buy a Sedona FD 2500 spinning reel, it is what I have on a couple of my other spinning rods. They were all out, but they had a Spirex FG 2500 for the same price. Are these reels comparable? Is one better that the other. I love the Sedonas that I have.

Well, the Spirex has a double knob handle and QuickFire system, the Sedona has neither but because the Spirex has the QuickFire the antireverse is not infinite, there 's a lot of backplay in the handle because it needs the backplay to self center the trigger of the Quickfire, in the Sedona the antireverse is infinite and has no handle backplay. As for other features they are pretty much alike.

I have the Sedonna but not the Spirex. I do have the Sharah also, and while all the reels are fine..I would if possible spend the extra few bucks and get the Sharah, great reel in that price range.

I have a Spirex and it's the smoothest spinning reel I have ever used although I've never used any real high dollar spinning reels. I like the QuickFire casting,Like the name implies it's quicker. The backplay has never been an issue while fishing this reel. I thought the double handle might be clumsy or in the way while reeling, but again it's never been an issue, I don't even notice the second handle while fishing

You don't want the spirex.

Why?

At that price level - in that basic size - all the major brands are roughly the same.  I have several Spirex reels & I like the quickfire trigger - but it isn't a necessity.  Shop around for the best deal.   You are in Kansas City - go to Rogers and see what reel deals they have this week as they are always closing out something.

Read what Raul said , that's why.

I have 2 spirex' they feel like I have a brick tide to my rods.  I don't like the quickfire system because of the back play in the handle and it always smacks my fingers if I'm not paying attention when reeling.  The double paddle handle should be left for casting reels it just adds unnecessary weight to the reels and serves no real purpose in my opinion.  Save your money and get a sahara or sedona.  Or save more money and get a stradic!  I have 3 of them and they are worth every penny.

Bingo.  You want to stay away from reels w/o infinite anti-reverse.

I have an older spirex reel that I used a lot when before I began using baitcasiting gear. It was a nice reel at the time, but I would not recommend it to anyone. I recommend saving and getting a Sahara.  I seems to me like the Sahara is a major step up in the shimano spinning reel lineup. It is not quite as refined as a stradic, but is probably signifincantly better than a spirex or sedona.

Once you get used to a reel with the infinite anti-revearse the Spirex will suffer by comparison IMO. I've owned two and will not be buying any more.

I was disappointed in the Spirex and have since then delegated it to a "loner" set up for when I bring someone out that doesn't have any gear. The lack of antireverse bugs the heck out of me, but I will admit that it is a smooth reel. Some guys love the Spirex, but I'm not one of them.

Thank you everyone for all of the help, I ended up upgrading and getting a shimano symetre. I am much happier with this reel.

I was just going to say spend a little more and get the Symetre which is one of my favorite spinning reels ever made. Great purchase!
