Need Help deciding reel rod line combo

Featured Replies

I fish in different lakes, there are three lakes in my neighborhood and they are a little muddier, i also fish in other lakes which are clear. I will be buying a pole for bass fishing only and i need help choosing what i need because i just not sure what to go with.  Also i only want a baitcaster because i enjoy using those the most

I fish with plastic worms and buzzbaits and occasionally use top water baits.

I will be going up to basspro shop to pick out my rod, reel and fishing line. My budget is $150 in all. What is the best combo you guys would go with that is most reliable

Get you two lightning rods to go with them and your in business for about 160.00

alright ill think about that.  What about one really good setup.

And what fishing line should i go with.  Should i go with flourocarbon and what pound test would be best to go with

The reason I suggested 2 rods 2 reels is because it's difficult for one rod to fish all different kinds of baits. If you want to spend all your money on one more expensive setup, you should be prepared to do much better with a few types of lures while not doing so well with others. For instance, a worm rod isn't exactly the best rod for spinnerbait.

If you want one really good setup, I would recommend a Daiwa Megaforce Plus for a 100, and spend 30 on an ugly stik lite.

Yea i guess your right i will go with two fishing poles.  Id like to get them both from bass pro though because i can see them and feel them out first.  Which two from there would you recomend they dont have to be the same as long as they are baitcasters.

Get your 2 reels from *** - they have free shipping for orders over 50 bucks.

As for rods, you will want a longer rod (around 7', no less than 6'6")with medium action for plastic worms and jigs. If you want, you could probably have it double as a spinnerbait rod if you get a 7' graphite pole with medium action and medium tip.

For cranking and topwater, you'll want a fiberglass rod. If you fish primary large baits, you can get a 7'+. Otherwise stick to a 6' or 6'6" for accuracy when fishing cover and bumping topwaters against logs and stuff. Medium action with a medium light to medium tip.

Keep in mind, this is what I would do, and may not be the best for another person, so just use this as a baseline. You may be a very accurate caster, in which case you can get longer rods for longer casts without worrying about accuracy. You may be very talented at feeling strikes, in which case you may feel more at home with Medium Heavy action for more power.

My suggestion would be the Daiwa Exceler and any decent rod from BPS. You can probably get a good deal on ebay for the Exceler. I have one I recently purchased off ebay for $40 paired with a Cabelas Prodigy Rod PDC705-1 MH/MF for $60 which I'm using at my crankbait setup. I have no problem with using 1/4 oz crankbaits with the reel and it's my new go to combo for crankbaits.

The AllStar ASR series of rods is also on sale at Cabelas for $60 and they are specific technigue rods and normally $100 as well.

I know u mentioned BPS but of course anything can be ordered online and Good Luck

This might help:

This is something to consider as you build your

collection over time:

Technique specific rods are for "enthusiasts".

Almost all your fishing can be done with just

one rod. Beyond that, you only "need" three rods:

Spinning: 6 1/2' or 7', M or MH, Fast Action

(soft plastics and light lures)

Baitcasting: MH or H, Fast Action

(jigs, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and all single hooks)

Baitcasting: MH, Moderate Action

(all treble hook lures)

Thanks for all the good information. I wish i could afford a different rod for every application. But for now i am going to buy two. I mainly fish with crankbaits, buzzbaits, and worms, and occasionally topwater baits and jerkbaits

So pretty much ill go with Bass Pro shops Tourney Special baitcast for Jigs, spinner baits and buzzbaits. What size line should i go with?? Flourocarbon?

Then with the Bass pro mega cast baitcast go with crankbaits, jerkbaits, and topwater. What size line should i use for that?? monofilament?

i also just noticed u live in germantown tn, i live in bartlett.

I think you wanna use fluoro for the crank reel since fluoro sinks easily and is great for deeper crankbaits.

For your jig/spinner/buzz rod, mono should be fine, although braid would be fine as well for its lack of stretch, which allows for better hooksets and sensitivity.

ok guys i purchased most of my gear today.

My reels i bought are a Abu Garcia Black Max baitcaster(have not bought yet, waiting for them to get more in stock.  Unless someone has better option)

and Daiwa Procaster Tournament PT100-6Bi baitcaster.

For my rods i bought one shakespeare Ugly Stik lite 6'6 medium and one Ugly Stik lite 6'6 medium Heavy

For line i bought Yo-zuri Hybrid Flourocarbon 15LB And Stren Original mono 12LB.

I still feel confused on what should go with what, i have not hooked all this up yet just need a lil help.

I'm not familiar with either reel, but after reading some of the reviews on both, I think you should have gotten 2 of the Daiwa Procaster reels. Just my personal opinion from the reading I did. Given that the Abu seems to be more likely to backlash, I would use that reel on the Medium Heavy rod with the heavier test line. You will be using heavier lures on this rod which (with the heavier line) should help with the backlashing problems that several reviewers mentioned.

I'm hoping others with actual experience with both will chime in with their opinions. Definitely will be better than mine which are based only on reviews. :)

yea i would have gotten the same one but i wanted to be able to differentiate between the two and im on a lil bit of a budget.

Yea ill c what a couple more people have to say also and then c what i should do from there.  I have not actually purchased the abu garcia yet

Get 2 of these while they're cheap.

Then find 2 rods. This way you can dedicate one rod to one set of lures and another to another set of lures.

To the OP - ping Raul on this reel - he has said it's a far better reel than the price would indicate. He has many high end reels in his quiver so his perspective would be valuable.  You can distinguish by different lines or have them on different rods.  Failing that, put a sticker or something on 1.

K i went with what yall said would be best so i went with one of the daiwa procasters.

So now i have a daiwa procaster and a daiwa procaster PT1006Bi.

two ugly stiks, both 6'6 one medium one medium heavy.

And fishing line 12LB stren original mono. And Yo-zuri Hybrid Flourocarbon 15LB.   Now that i have exactly what i need how should i rig these up with wich?

  • Author

yea i read the reviews they got over 4.5 out of 5 on all reviews and they were the only thing i could afford so yea pretty much bought two of em.

  Ugly stik lites

  • Author

After rethinking, im probably going to give one of the ugly stiks to my dad since he is about to buy a reel, return the other and buy my two berkley lightning rods for a little bit more

I would grab the BPS Graphite series over the lightning rods. Too bad you just missed out on the Bionic Blade sale. I grabbed one and wish I had snagged another.
