Davey knot

Featured Replies

I tried this knot on both 10 and 12 pound mono and it slipped a coupla times. When it held, it sure looked fragile. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm apprehensive.

You're contradicting yourself .  Have you used it or not ?

How is that a contradiction? I simply said I'm apprehensive as it slipped when tied at home and those times that it did not slip, it simply appeared fragile to my eyes.

anyway I'm not here to get that type of feedback, pal.

He is just trying to clarify the information provided, makes it a lot easier to provide a good answer. The contradiction is you start off by saying you tried the knot on 10 and 12 pound mono. The 3rd sentence starts with "I haven't tried it yet".  You left out trying the knot was at home.

But to answer you question, I haven't tried this specific knot. But if I have no confidence in how it looks at home I will not use it while fishing.

I wasn't trying to tick you off and I'm not your pal .

Here is a link discussing this knot. It seems there may be one trick to keep in mind when tying it. Two tricks if you count using a second loop with larger hooks.

I will have to give it a try. Never heard of it before. Just learning to use the Alberto and Palomar knots. Been using the Uni knot for a long time. Also want to try the Snell knot. BUT if this knot (Davey knot) will hold nearly 100%, it is definitely faster to tie. Thanks.

I dedicated that knot for one day out at the water and i didnt have any knots come un-done, or break. Just make sure you tie and cinch it right!  ;D

I'm not your buddy friend!

Ok here is the skinny as I understand it.

A few years ago Davie Wooten who I believe guides on the white river was coaching a young angler for an Olympic competition. He showed him the Davey knot because it was strong (85%) and very quick to tie. The idea being that the knot was going to be retied after a fish or two anyway. So the speed in tying the knot was what it was all about.  Got that? It came about in the course of fly fishing. I've used it for that purpose only for several years now. Bear in mind that I'm tying tippets from 2 - 6 lb. For it's intended purpose it's great. Do I use it on anything else? Nope.
