Savvy or Powell

Featured Replies

I can't decide between Dobyn SS 704c and Powell 704c...

Wondering which one everyone thought would be a better value and which is lighter(better balanced)?

Any opinions are well appreciated.

They feel almost identical as far as I can tell.  They are both awesome rods.  The Savvy is prettier.

I have fished Big Tom's Powell 704c, well own one now, and have a 704 Savvy.  They are both stupendous rods and fish very similar.  I prefer the Savvy though, it looks a little better.  The Powell is a very minimalist rod, the Savvy has a bit of bling but not much.  You should be happy with either.

haha.  I know.  But is it $20 prettier??  I really like Keith and have a few Powells now that I'm very happy with.  The guy at Dobyns said "all of the savvys are between 2.9-3.1oz.  Hard to believe given the range of lengths.

Can you tell me which one might be lighter?

Dobyns rods balance better, regardless of weight, they will feel lighter then rods that may weigh less for this reason. Powell rods are known for being a bit tip heavy, although at only 7ft it's less noticeable compared to a 7'6 rod.

The Savvy rods definitely have a bit more flash, and many guys say they feel as good as any $200 rods they have used.

Well I was leaning towards the savvy.  I'm getting that and I think the Powell swim jig.

Anyone have any thoughts on the swim jig?

I throw my swim jigs with a Dobyns 765 and 795. You could grab a Savvy Series 766 or a 735 to throw swim jigs with depending on how heavy and stout of a jig hook is on your swim jigs. Both great rods.

That added length of the 7'3 and 7'6 help you cast those baits further, and move more line on the hook set.

I'm definitely looking for a rod closer to 7' as my rod locker holds my 7'1" loomises perfect but has a hard time with my max765.  That powell swim jig is 7'2".  I really with I lived somewhere where I could put my hands on these and stop this guessing game.

That 735 Savvy would work well, and is only 1" longer.

I too have the issue with rod lockers, but mine does fit 8fters. There just isn't carpet past the first 6 1/2 ft.

The Rod Glove makes a great rod protector. are great ways to protect your rods and allow you to slide them all the way in there. Saves you a lot of money from not damaging guides.
