Seeking advice on rod/reel pairings

Featured Replies

I've spent the last umpteen years throwing every lure I have with a 6'6" M or 5' L spinning rig. I finally took the baitcasting plunge this summer and added the following to the mix: 6'6" Medium fast action & 7' MH moderate action rods (St. Croix Mojo) and Shimano Citica E (6.3:1) and Curado E (7.0:1) reels. I mainly use the following lures: lipless cranks (1/4 - 1/2 oz), shallow to medium crankbaits (1/4 - 1/2 oz), buzz & spinner baits (3/8 - 1/2 oz), rooster tails (1/8 - 1/4 oz), topwater (poppers, tiny torpedo and similar: 1/4 - 1/2 oz) and soft plastics (trick worms, rage tail toads, SPRO frogs, senkos, beavers).

What would be the best pairing of the Mojo rods and Shimano reels (example - citica w/6'6" M) and which setup should primarily throw which lures (example - 6'6" for topwater & plastics, 7' for the rest - or strictly by weight)? Also, are there some lures that I should not attempt with the baitcasters, but rather leave in the hands of the spinning rigs?

Thanks in advance for the help.

The ratio on your reels is pretty close to one another, but given the options I'd put the Citica on the Mod action rod and throw the crank baits and maybe spinnerbaits on that. The other setup would probably be ok for some light jigs or t-rigs in light cover and topwater. Personally, I stick with spinning tackle for baits <1/2 oz for the most part. I suggest reading some threads and articles on tackle choices to assist in putting together future combos. Good luck.

Curado/6'6"M-f plastics, topwater, smaller spinnerbaits.
