I dont backlash very often anymore, but when I do, instead of picking it out, I use the thumb trick.  Im sure you guys know it.  Hold down the line on spool with thumb and reel iin just a little.  Repeat until tangle is free.  The question I have is if this process can screw up the bearings, washers, and any other internals at all.

I seriously doubt it, can't be any more stress than catching a big 'un.

They only thing to watch out for is damaging the line.  Fluorocarbon doesn't fair well to this treatment.

Good advice.  Luckily I have braid on one and mono on the other.  I rarely ever backlash with the braid, but when I do, its easy to just pick out.  I use the thumb trick mostly with the mono which is the one I tend to get some backlash with every so often.
