I use a 6' 6" mh / fast spinning set up for soft plastics in the mostly stained lakes in Central and So Fla from approx 1 ft to maybe 3-4 ft of water.

I use 20 # power pro with a 25# floro leader tied useing a uni to uni.

My question is the floro leader to heavy?

When you use a leader as was discussed in a previous thread should it be heavier than your main line?

I use a 20# fluoro leader. I tried the 25#> and the knot kept hanging in the tip guide (uni-uni).

My purpose of the fluoro leader is to make the braid sink for weightless presentations-no other reason.

I use 8# mono equivelent diameter superlines (30#-40#).

For my spinning rigs I use a 20lb braid. 12lb fluoro has always been fine for me. Anything larger than 30lb and I'll move up to at least a 14lb leader.  If you're having a knot get hung in the guides, you may want to try a more compact knot.  Something like the Albright Special or Alberto knot.  Both of them are easy to tie and pretty darn strong.

From what I read on here most people seem to use a lighter leader. My roots are freshwater but I do as many saltwater fisherman do and use a heavier leader. My typical freshwater setup is 10 or 15# braid with 20# mono leader ( I use a swivel with about 18" ), the 20# helps to prevent lure loss when I do get hung up.

Why do you use a leader in stained water ?

Abrasion resistance.

I'm close to what you guys use for the same reasons...

Abrasion and helping the braid to sink.

I changed out the 25# floro leader for 20# this morning.

Our next tourn is Sat on Lake Istopoga here in Fla and I'll give it a try.

Let us know how you do.  Last time I was on Istokpoga we had a rough day.  Took a while to find some fish.  Nothing but smaller fish around the hydrilla.

We were back there in Aug. and found the same thing.

I'm gonna try to talk my boater into trying around the little island first thing with top water especially if it cools off a little bit.

Then hit the reed lines.

The leader doesnt need to be heavier lb test than the braid. Just a larger diameter. For soft plastics I use 20lb Power Pro with an 8-10lb leader. The only reason I can think of using a heavier leader is if your fishing heavy cover, but if that was the case tieing direct would be the way to go.
