Pitching rod question?

Featured Replies

Would a Meduim Fast action rod be too much for a pitching rod?

Because Im planning on buying the Abu Garcia Vengeance as my current pitching rods back up.

And Ive heard that a medium feels alot like a medium heavy. So I was wondering if a 7'4 M with a medium fast action would still be ok for pitching? :-/

I'd go for a MH just to be on a safer side.

What weights will you be throwing?

I also prefer a sorta Mod-Fast-ish action for pitching. I prefer this because I think I get longer pitches, softer entries (lower flight profile), and a better hook up ratio with braid.

Pitching is nothing more than a style of casting.  You can pitch with ANY rod.

The power of the rod you need is dependent on what you're going to be using and where you're using it.

It will be used for basic jigs. Nothing TOO heavy or light.

The longest spinning rod they make that is a true MH is 7 ft.  Which I thought might be a tad to short for pitching but..I guess thats why Im asking you guys.

For basic jigs 1/4-3/4 oz I'd get the MH. I dont think the 4" less will really affect your pitching, and your quite unique for pitching with spinning gear. Most people use casting for flipiing/pitching.

I think the pitching action may be a little easier, and obviously remove backlashes, but I prefer casting because as soon as my jig hits the water, the little movement in my reel handle engages the spool, where as on spinning I have to close the bail then put my hand on the handle, although thats merely personal preference.

With some practice, you can learn to feather the line and close the bail with your right middle and ring fingers. Its one of the reasons I hold the rod with three fingers forward. I use mostly for pitching a drop shot, since it can be a bulky rig to lob.

My 15 y.o. fingers aren't quite long enough for that yet!  ;D

(No small tool comments needed)

Although yes, that is a good technique.

Thankyou.

Pitch with your "Worm Rod".

Your flipping stick is where it matters, length, power, ect.
