NRX rods

Featured Replies

All this talk about them i kinda want to pick one up now and check it out.  Out of the lineup anyone recommend one over the other?   Im more looking for a light tackle rod for small jigs, lighter t-rigs and etc. Anyone have experience with the lighter end of the rod lineup?

From a previous post

I picked up a NRX802CJWR from tackleware house during the 20% off sale for fishing light weight jigs for erie smallies. I have it paired with a core 50mg7 and 10lb braid & 12lb maxima leader. Since I got it I have only used it  with suspending jerk baits for smallies because that was what was working at the time. It is a very light combo and a pleasure to use. Very light tip for casting. My only objection is that the back to back uni knot lets the tag end of the mono leader catch on the small recoil guides when reeling in. I will try the alberto knot to see if it resolves the issue or dedicate the combo to floro. Extremely sensitive rod as well it should be for the price. It loads up nicely after hooking up and is capable of handling big smallies in open water but really lets you enjoy the fight because it does not overpower the fish. In fact big smallies on this combo actually felt bigger than they turn out to be after landing them. I caught numerous fish between  4 lbs up to 5-15oz on it this fall before winterizing the boat. Try one if you like but they will & do spoil you.

Thank you, missed that on the search. I was thinking between the 802 or 852 but leaning toward the 852 cause the length and supposedly it has a bit more backbone.  Maybe could get away fishing a little bit of heavier cover. Then I keep thinking if I should bump up to the MH and that will still handle lighter lures.

bassinbrian,

the 852 is the same blank specs as the 802 just in a 5" longer rod. If your not really dedicated to "super lightness" I would suggest looking at the 853 med heavy for more backbone to handle occasional heavy cover situations. My choice for the 802 as a smallie rod is for lake erie open water with no cover to contend with except the bottom fishing 15-40 feet of water. They are sweet sticks.

Alright thank you for the help, I appreciate it. I better go with the MH then, sounds more like what I need.

I know this thread is a little old,  but I had to chime in.

I went to the St. Paul sportsmans show yesterday and held a nrx for the 1st time.  WOW!  They sure feel nice!!!  Wish I could afford one,  but it probably won't happen.  If I run into a chunk of $ it'll be the 1st thing I get.

I got mine last week!  Yeah it feels nice but I wish there wasn't so much ice on the lakes, makes it hard to fish it :)  It would of been fun to go to that sportsman show but I was out of town for work so maybe next time ill have to swing up there.

Yeah,  it was something to do for the 2 boys and myself.  Lots of stuff to look at.  I bought some koppers lures( a soft bodied frog,  a frog crank/wake bait,  a jointed lipless minnow and a lipless pumpkinseed crank)  all were 20% off.

The kids and I also spent a lot of time at trout pond.

Those nrx rods are a thing of beauty!  It's hard to believe they could come up w/ something better than a glx,  but they did.  A lot of people think that most of the price comes from the name,  but theres a reason that its hard to find a discount on loomis rods new or used.  They're d--n good rods.

I've owned several in the past and I'm trying to find a deal on a used glx.  Currently I have several different rod brands and when it comes to comparing,  I try to compare each to some sort of loomis( imx,  glx....)

Koppers lures are nice I got the craw crankbait and shad crankbait last year.  Ill have to pick up the bluegill and pumpkin seed in both crankbaits and lipless this year to try.  Plus those frogs look amazing!  This is my first g loomis rod that I have owned and im sure it wont let me down :)
