You know what vastly improved my casting distance? Learning how to use a baitcaster and using proper casting technique. I gained about 30% more distance (even with my spinning reels), with much less fatigue...

This is a good point. You can get in the bad habit of muscling your casts with spinning tackle because you don't suffer the catastrophic backlashes. The rod should be doing most of the work and get you better results.
