Gear ratios? Need help choosing which.

Featured Replies

I need some advice.  I am looking at buying a new reel for a custom rod I had made.  I am not technique specific with my rods, I want them to do many things.  It is a light rod with a extra fast tip and I use it for small cranks, 1/4 oz jigs, 1/4oz spinnerbaits, and some light texas rig plastics (grubs, 1/8-1/4oz).

So my dillema is, I am choosing between a Curado 200E7 or a Citica 200E.  My thought is a that the 6.3:1 ratio of the citica might be better for a general purpose reel.  But, the Curado is, in theory, a better reel.  All of my current reels are in the 6:1 range. How big of a difference is the 6.3:1 vs 7:1?

Help please...

Not a big difference between 6.3 and 7.1 - just 3 (or so) inches per handle turn (IPT). The baits you're considering are either worked with the rod tip, or are easy to crank so there would be no problem using a 7.1. So, it comes down to which reel you like the best.  Most folks would probably choose the Curado.

3 inches per handle turn may not sound like much of a difference, but when you're trying to reel in from a distance as fast as you can to make another cast, those 3 inches start adding up pretty quick.  I'm down to only 2 reels with 6.4 to 1, all the rest are 7.1 to 1.  You can always not use all the speed you have...I'd go with the faster reel.

Where I want a low speed reel the most is when I'm using big blade spinner baits.A medium to low speed reel for cranks. And a high speed for everything else.

Have you considered a 50E? This might be a good fit especially for throwing the lighter baits. Ratio wise, the difference isn't huge but if going with the bigger reel I'd pick the CU-E7.

Thank you everyone for the advice.  I have thought about the 50E, but I like the way the 200's balance on my rod.  The Curado 200E7 seems to be an extremely popular reel, I am probably leaning that direction.  I do have a nice spinning set up, which has a 5.2:1 reel.  I could use that for the slow stuff.

You can't compare the gear ratio of a spinning reel to that of a casting reel. Most spinning reels have a much higher IPT (even at the same gear ratio), and the ITP will also vary according to spool diameter, so a smaller reel will have a lower IPT than a larger version of the same reel.
