Favorite old lure

Featured Replies

If anyone ever runs across a lure resembling this I'd love to hear about it.  When I was a kid I bought a cheap plastic lure for about $1.19 at a local hardware store.  It was a one piece molded plastic and it just killed the bass.  I could stand beside anyone and catch more bass than them.  I made the mistake of using it without a leader, in a lake heavily populated with Northern Pike.  Bye bye.  It was all black with two white skunk stripes down the back. It looked like this.

First, welcome to the best fishing site on the net.

Second, my favorite old lure is still a pretty popular and productive lure. The Rapala Shad Rap. I've caught fish with them for over twenty years and still going strong.

Welcome, Graph.

Nope, not familiar with that lure.

Glad you are with us and that we can count on your wisdom to help us be better bass fishermen and just plain people.

That looks a lot like a Bagley diving Smoo......but since you mentioned it was plastic, I guess it rules that out.

That looks like it. I'm not positive about the plastic. I was probably 14-15 at the time. How old is that lure? I'm 61 now so that's 46 years ago.

Thanks Brokejaw

Smoos aren't that old - I'm guessing their production run was during the 70's-80's(?)...really not sure on that.   They do have a cool action though - they pop up on eBay with a lot of regularity - you can usually snag them for a decent price as they aren't really all that popular.

You might pose your question at tackleunderground.com......there are some guys there who pretty much know about every crankbait that has ever been made... ;)
