Need a good worm rod...

Featured Replies

I bought a Skeet Reese Spinnerbait/Worm rod a month ago based on the Skeet Reese Jig rod that I have. In the store it seemed awesome, tried it out finally at my mostly thawed out lake and I hated it. Unlike the SR Jig rod which is wonderful (I use for everything from worms to cranks to topwater) , I cannot feel a thing on the SR Worm rod. I am within my 90 return policy at Gander...

Can anyone recommend a good Worm rod for $99??? The Veritas seems nice, and there are a number of St. Croix Triumph series that look good as well. Any good ideas?

Lamiglas Excel Bass spinnerbait rod gets decents reviews... Shimano Compre (I have 2) is good for the money as well.

Haven't used a Veritas yet but I heard they are decent.

I like the Premier better than the Triumph by feel but have only owned and fished Avid \ LTB.

I would take a look at the falcon bucoo. Good rods right at $100 or they've now got bucoo's with microguides for $30 more.

Falcon original  series ..a very good rod  and put some $ in your pocket

The shimano compre is tough to beat for the money, plus you get the best warranty in the business

Thanks guys, I have a lot of choices... Can't wait to get my hands on some of these... I'm gonna bring my reel to the store and tie on a lure and test each one before finally deciding.

Keep your eyes peeled on online flea markets for a used St. Croix Avid or Shimano Crucial.  They'll cost about $100 shipped and you'll be happy with the extra sensitivity that you'll get compared to a rod that retails for $100 new.

Agreed, Twice the rod for half the money.

I've made Several purchases in the flea market and on Ebay

I would go MH/F or MH/XF Avid.  Personally, I prefer full cork handles for worms and bottom contact and split grips for moving baits.

Guys, he is returning the rod within the 90 day return policy.  Will they refund his money so he can buy a rod elsewhere?  Or will they allow in store trade only?  No sense in suggesting a classified rod if he has to buy it from Gander Mountain.

Good deal on that Avid.

I went to Gander today and they didn't have any of the rod suggestions you guys talked about. I narrowed it down to either a St Croix Premier MHF 6'8" (which I have one of already), A Skeet Reese Honeycomb (Senko/Toad 7'0") or the new Abu Veritas (HF 7'0"). I bugged the old feller at the store by constantly switching my reel and a jig on about two dozen different rods to help me decide. I almost decided on the Skeet Reese Honeycomb rod which felt great. Since I already have the St Croix I didn't want to duplicate the rig I already had and wanted to diversify a little. So I ended up with the Veritas, it just felt the best.

Thanks for all of the responses!!

I had a 7'0 MH Fast Fenwick for $80. HMX or HMG...I can't remember. I was pleasantly surprised with how it handled. I like it.

I picked up the same rod.  I just wanted to try something different from my Falcons.  I haven't gotten the chance to use it yet, but plan on putting it to use in two weeks.  Let us know how you like it.

Nice pick up man, I want to try a Veritas. I like the feel of them, especially the 7'6 MH.
