Lily pads

Featured Replies

Just in case anyone didn't catch it, Hook N Look did a show today with the Rage Shad and had some nice underwater video.  They also revealed something that I've never realized.

From underneath, lily pads are translucent! Yup, they look like a stained glass window from underneath.

Does that change anyone's approach to slop fishing?  I always thought that the fish could hear the bait over the top of the pads, but not see them.  My approach was to pop the frog or whatever up and let them thump down on the pad, let it sit, then slowly creep it over the side into open water where it usually gets hit.

That's why I use dark colored( Black,Green) Ripple worms T rigged Weightless. I have pulled fish from under the pads fishing this way.

Thanks for the tip Ryan. I didn't know that. I think I'll be going to dark colors for fishing the pads.

Cheers,

I was surprised to see how much the fish could see from under the lilly pads. Very interesting stuff.

Kim Stricker's videos are very educational.

I did see this and was also surprised - unfortunately what Stricker said was that they are "tranparent" - I rewound it to listen again and this is what he said - you are correct they are "translucent".  Not a big deal, but it caught my attention.

Use whatever color you like as long as light doesn't pass through it. The fish will be seeing the underside shape of it, and everything will mostly be the same shadowy black color until it hits the open water.

A darker color might help it create more of a side profile, but all colors should have a similar "footprint" on the lily pad.

That was a great show for sure! Now I want to go and fish some pads! And that Rage Shad looks like a winner.

That actually explains a lot. Thanks Ryan.

The same show has been playing three times a week, so the show that was onl today should be on again Friday at 2PM Central.

They miss alot because they dont' wait for the lure to get off the pad.  When they hit it, the pad lauches the frog up into the air.

Either that or maybe you're like me and get too anxious with the hooksets. Heads up!!

Thanx for the heads up...setting up the DVR to record it!  ;)
