Bearings swap...

Featured Replies

Came across this video on youtube...

Got a few of these Curados...and this tune up got me wondering if I should give it a shot.  What's your two cents on this?

My opinion: that in order to obtain the full benefit of bearing upgrades you want to change BOTH spool supporting bearings nd not just one, the gain changing only one will be marginal ( the dude only changed one ).

I haven't taken this particular reel apart and I don't have the schematics of this reel in front of me...but I'm assuming that both bearings are the same?

Yup, both bearings are the same. One is on the non handle sideplate ( as in the video ) the other spool supporting bearing is under the tension knob cap. If you are going to change bearings I suggest you change both. Changing only one is like for example trying to increase the grip on a car by changing only one tire.

Most reels have either 2 or 3 spool support bearings and for upgrades all should be replaced at the same time. If replacing a worn bearing, it is not necessary to change the others. Most of the time I upgrade bearings when one or more are worn out and need replacing anyway.

Thanks for this discussion guys! I was about to post to the forum, but searched for bearing upgrade fist. Thanks for the information, really appericate it.

This is a very poor video with bad information:

1. There is no mention of the bearing under the cast control cap, which also has to be changed if there is an upgrade.

2. The orange seals do not have to be left on the ceramic bearing, and in fact most us of who super tune our own reels remove them.

3. There is no mention of ceramic bearing proper lubrication and required cleaning and the frequency thereof.

4. There is no mention of ABEC 7 stainless steel bearing also being available.

This video is like giving everyone half of what they need to know.
