baitcaster line breakage issues

Featured Replies

Recently bought two Abu Garcia Silvermax rod and reel combos. I have found them easy to use and really like them.

One problem I am having is after a couple of minor backlashes, when clearing the jam, i find that my line has been cut in half on the spool.

I had an inexpensive Pflueger for the last two years, and even through major backlashes, never had the line break inside the spool. I thought maybe I had bought some old brittle line (10lb spiderwire mono), so respooled with Sufix 12lb mono from a different store. Same problem.

I was throwing spinnerbaits and crankbaits.

I contacted Abu Garcia, and they just want me to send them the reels for warranty possibilities. Since it happened on both reels, I think it is something I am doing.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Roy

One thing to check is you spool tension. If it is set too loose the spool can have a gap between in and the frame. If 10lb line, somewhat small in diameter, gets between the spool and the frame the spool rim will easily cut the line when you pull to pickout. Too loose of a spool could be the cause of the  backlash.

This is the first thing I would look for. If your knob is to loose your line will get stuck and frayed badly and you probably wont notice it till you throw your next cast and the line brakes. I didn't care to much for that spider line mono it actually felt brittle to me. Maybe it was just a bad spool but I doubt it.

You need to keep tension on the line. I do this by pinching the line with a rag wet with line conditioner. The trick is to grab the line far enough ahead of the levelwind or bail and not apply apply side pressure causing the line to load unevenly.
