I plan on purchasing some new lures soon. Whenever I look for them there are so many different sizes. What  I am asking is if there is a general weight for bass lures such as 1/4 oz or 1/2oz.

its tough when first starting  i have a bunch of sizes and wieghts   i would say the weight i use most often would be 1/4  or 3/8  which are really similar   but i use alot of different weights and sizes but yea try these first  

It really depends on what type of lures, where you fish, the cover, the conditions, line test and how deep you fishing.

You could be fishing a weightless fluke near the surface or punching mats with 2oz jig.  Both work awesome under the right conditions.

What type of fishing do you do?

It depends how deep the water your fishing are and the wind conditions/cover your fishing. Can you tell me if your fishing from shore? Or how deep majority of the water your fishing is?

I fish primarily from the shore but I do use a boat some times. The water depth really varies a lot.
