Drop Shoting

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

I was just curious how this works.  I have been hearing alot about it.  When is the best time to use this method?

heat of the summer!!!!!   i use it alot and that is the only time it produces like it should

Well, it's working well out here in So CA right now. One guy said he caught 8 nice bass using that technique last weekend in 57 degree water on Lower Otay. Dang, I knew I should have been doing it too!

my boater and i each caught one using it in a tourney on a FX Roboworm in oxblood color

if ur asking how it works      then    sinker on the bottom then hook and worm and then it goes up to u

This rig will work just about anytime of the year.  I really like it for bed fishing smallmouth.  I like to use a small Western goby in the sand color or anyother small white finesse type bait.  I know a few guys that are catching a few right now with water temps around 45 degrees dropshoting a tube in 50' of water

Here in Northern California all year around.  It is a lot more versitile than most people give it credit.

If I may add to that great illustration.  I tie my hook on with a palomar not, just make sure to leave an extra long tag end to whatever length you want the bait to be above the weight. Then for weights I LIGHTLY crush on split shot.  I say lightly so that if it gets stuck in rocks I can pull them off the end of the line and not loose my hook and etc.

I go with a drop shot rig post spawn for both LM & SM till the water becomes hard.

what kind of retrieve are you guys using?

I have not had much luck with DSing.

I usually let it drop and then kinda bounce the tip a little while holding the pole kinda high. then i lower the pole and reel slowly.  And repeat.

Is this correct?

I use it from the first time my boat hits the water in the spring (have to wait for the thaw), till i can't put my boat on the water anymore in the fall.

Trixo69 and Gummybear,

There are articles on this site about drop shotting.

Google "drop shotting" and bunch of web sites will pop up.

Just remember a few suggestions when drop shotting:

1.  Use a Palamor knot, as advised by others.

2.  Run the tag end of the line back through the eye of the hood from the point of the hook back through the eye so that the hook stands out straight.

3.  Use anything you want as your sinker.  A bullet weight tied on with an O-ring; a drop shot sinker that can pull off when it gets caught in some rocks or structure; just tie your sinker to the end of the line; any type of sinker you want to use.

4. You do not have to have the sinker two or three feet from the hook. 8 inches is a good separation but it is up to you to decide.

5.  You can use any hook you want.  Some use a small Octopus 1/0 hook. Others use a #1 hook.  I like to use a weedless 1/0 or 2/0 hook.

6.  Baits are of your selection. You can fish small and finesse or heavy and bulky. I like the finess application the best so the bait can float above the sinker.

7.  Be careful when stowing the rod as the free flowing sinker will get wrapped around your other rods and  you will have a disaster on your hands.  Just secure the sinker to the rod buy the use of a rubber band being placed on your rod above the reel. Slip the sinker under the rubber band to secure it.

8.  And read, read and read about this technique and then practice, practice and practice to learn how to use it to the best of your ability.

Now go out and get snagged! ;D

Thank you sam for telling this sam some info about DS. I have read the articles at the top of the page already. they were pretty informative, but i am looking for techniques, or more so, see what variations on the different kinds of techniques you guy have tried or use.

For the vast majority of my drop shotting I either drop directly next to the boat, or pitch it within 10 yards. After the weight hits the bottom, I lift the rod tip so the line just starts to get tight, then a little tip jiggle. Then a semi slack line, then repeat. To move the DS I lift up on my rod and move the rig some, then repeat the process. Once I'm out of the strike zone I reel in slowly.
