Mattlures Baby Bass - Got a Few Questions

Featured Replies

I took the plunge at the Bassmaster Classic Expo and got 4 of em.  I heard this is a good starter swim bait.  I have a couple other swimbaits but want to catch some big uns with this bait.

Logically, seems like these would work best after the bass spawn...like June.  What are the best months to use these baits??  What is the optimal depth to run these and approximate rate of fall?  And any techniques would be appreciated.

Thnx

95% of the time I fish it in ponds, but a couple times I have ventured into the big lake with it. I had the best luck fishing docks, casting onto the shore and dragging it into the water quietly and right below the surface. Also, I learned on this site to lube the lure down with an oil based fish attractant (like Megastrike) for better hooksets. I fished it all through Winter, and I imagine it will produce even better soon. As for the rate of fall, I'm not sure, but I would guess somewhere around 1.25 feet a second. Here is a picture of the first bass I ever caught on it in my pond.

the best time to fish a baby bass is any time ..... theres no certin time go fish it .... ;)

Fish it anywhere. Like they said be sure a use Megastrike or vasaline would work in a pinch. I usually fish it from 1 to 3 ft under the surface just outta sight. Slow steady retrive and wham. Just use a sweeping motion to set the hook and as fourbiz told me "water ski them back to the boat". Bass have a  habit of getting leverage on this bait and throwing it. I have placed weedless treble hooks on the belly eye to help combat it.

I bought three of these last year and did not use them very much. I plan on throwing them this year. What line would you suggest in clear water. I currently use 15lb p-line flouroclear.

Good stuff.  Thanks for the responses.  I guess if a bass sees an easy meal...they won't be thinking about if it makes sense.

I need to remember about the megastrike.....

On the line...I'm going to use 14lb Sunline MGC myself.  That would probably be the lower range of a good pound test....I'd imagine.

One more question.  Every try to fish em a little deeper?....like letting them drop to the bottom in 25 ft of water and then reeling back?
