planning a trip to Falcon

Featured Replies

We are interested in planning a trip to Falcon Lake or Armistad (sp?). Any comments about which is better, guides, time of year, towns, etc would be geatly appreciated. We would be drivng down and stay in a hotel/motel. There would most likely be 4 guys...so we would like a guide operation with 2 guides/boats, but would go with 2 seperate operations if needed.

I fish both. Right now Falcon is the way to go. There are plenty of rooms in the Zapata area.

FYI:

Heavy tackle

65# braid

Lake is huge so watch the weather

Mexico license required if you cross to the south side of the lake

Currently the lake is 12' low, and it can go up and down quickly.

Thanks Jack,  Any guides you recommend? Is Zapata a decent town to stay in?

I cannot help you with guides, but I think Oso Blanco is a pretty decent spot to stay. Decent rooms (@$60), ramp on site, large creek to fish if there is a north wind. The wife and I enjoyed our stay there a few weeks ago.

Zapata is the only town on the lake with hotel/motel rooms. Well there are a few others, but just do yourself a favor and stay in Zapata. Security issues will be avoided by doing that. There are several boat ramps you need to avoid also. Laredo is 50 miles up river or Roma is down below. Stay out of Roma.

Charlie will answer his phone while fishing. The last time I called him he was on the water fishing Sugar Lake across the border in Mexico.

Call Falcon Lake Tackle and they will put you in contact with many more.

Personally, if you go prepared you should not need a guide. December-February is spawning time. Carry bug spray and something to cut through the brush(If the water is up) and enjoy. I never fish the Mexico side either. There is plenty of water to fish on the Texas side. You can go to: www.falconlaketackle.com and get all the info you will need.

Don't read alot about the safety issues in this post either. If you use your head you will be fine.

Thanks guys for the help. I'm gonna get at this pretty soon. We were actually looking at spring of 2011, just so guys can sve up the money. We were originally thinking Mexico...but money is tight. Many people have recomennded going this way. As far as taking our own boats without guides we would be towing about 1900 miles one way. We thought it would be just easier to pay someone to take us around. 4 guys in one truck is better than 4 guys in 2 truck towing 20ft Rangers. LOL

Fistful...thanks again if I have anymore questions I'll PM you at a later time.

This is a view of a sunken bridge, look how much detail you can see on that, look at the creek bed, see the stick ups and lay downs around it?
