potomac river longnose gar

Featured Replies

today while fishing the potomac i saw tons of gar porpousing and they would take nothing. how can i catch them.  i also saw a snakehead about 3 feet long come up to gulp air.  at first i thought it was a carp but it was black slender and had a weird triangularish head and round fins.

the one gar i ever caught in florida was on a surface popper, i ticked it off just enough and then it hit, hope that works, although i dunno why u would wanna catch them, those things are vicious! :)

You saw a 36 inch snakehead? That sounds a bit big for a snakehead. You should have caught that meter long snakehead and slit him frim tail to gills.

the snakehead had left before we cast a soinnerbait to kim and even after he went back deeo he didnt strike.  and thanks for the gar help.

This may sound strange, but you can catch gar on just a piece of nylon rope.  Cut the rope to about 6-8 inches long then fray about 1/2 of it.  Then tie it to your line and cast it out.  Once it is wet you can retrieve it like a rapala (jerk-jerk-pause).  The gar will try to eat it and its teeth will get tangled in the frayed rope and it will not be able to get out.

This really works well when the gar are floating around near the surface.

This is actually the best way to catch gar. I have found that white rope works the best. No matter the condition of water.

My buddy just picked up a 15 pounder on a chartreuse and blue baby minus 1 in Pohick bay on a kayak.
