I got some great initial info here including a guide who posted:

I fished Black Lake several years ago. We caught LMB, pike and sunfish. If I recall the town was Hammond. I didn't use a guide but there were several advertising locally. The lake is shallow, weedy and turns the color of pea soup in late summer. It's a short drive to the St Lawrence from there also. We spent week in the area and had a really good time.

I assume you were there in late summer? I was planning July sometime.

I was there July 4th week but the weather was hot and humid, more what you'd expect in Aug. Some cooler, drier air moved in late in the week and the bite improved.

We used to go for a week every year around the fourth of July, mostly for Largemouths but there is also a good population of Smallmouths. A lot of northerns as well. We used to catch a lot of channel cats while bass fishing. A good spot for flipping and pitching is the Indian river inlet. There is a good distance of the river before it enters the lake where there is awsome slop mats and emergent vegetation with current. Look the lake over on google earth and order a fishing hot spots map, theres plenty of good bass fishing. Its been a few years since we have been up there. We used to rent campsites at McClears Cottage Colony, and at Rogers Old Oak Camps.

Don't understand why anyone would drive 2 hrs past Oneida Lake to fish >>>>>>>>>>>>>.

Because Black Lake is a special lake, with the calm serenity of the Canadian northwoods and the beautiful St. Lawrence River nearby.

Black Lake is a better largemouth lake than Oneida with an ample supply of smallmouths too. And it doesn't host national B.A.S.S. tournaments.

I love Oneida too...but it is not better than Black Lake.

Black lake is a great place to fish. I like the hammond end of the lake. Jig and crank the steep rock walls around the islands.

I have a day and 1/2 to hit Black Lake without really getting the family really mad; I'm meeting them in NY. Any suggestions for a guide or boat rental places.

Been wanting to hit this lake, just haven't had the time!

My buddy has a cottage on black lake and I usually try to get up there at least once or twice every year. There's lots of good northern pike and LMB's. I fish the northern end of the lake mostly, since that's where the cottage is. There's plenty of lodging for fisherman, and most of these places offer boat rentals.

theres lots of awesome fisheries within 2 hours of oneida

fished Black many times in tournaments. ALOT of 14.75" fish LOL. there is a 15"in.

Depending on time of year but I like to dropshot and or carolina rig deeper outside weedlines and drops. or get up and flip the junk

I fished Black Lake the week after July 4th last year and I'm happy to say that I'll be returning the same time this year. I've already started the countdown.

We stayed at McLear's. Our campsite was less than 50 yards from our dock. Beautiful, clean campground.

Between 5 guys I'd say we caught well over 400 Bass that week. My buddy also hooked into about five Northerns and three 10 lb class cats. Our LM's averaged about 1.5 lbs and they were all beautiful, healthy fish.

You can pack light. We caught everything on Worms and Spinnerbaits. I tried throwing some Cranks, Buzzbaits and Jerkbaits but didn't have any luck. My buddy swore by 7'' black Berkley power worms but I had more luck with Senkos. Color didn't seem to matter for me.

The lake is a bass fisherman's paradise. During the week we saw a maximum of two jet skis. Everyone who goes to Black Lake, goes to fish. At least that was my experience.

Best of luck up there. You'll have an awesome time.
