Early Spring fishing in Maine...what to use?

Featured Replies

Hey all.  Looking for some insights from maybe more seasoned anglers here in the northeast.  Despite the early spring here in southern Maine the water is still cold and the bass are just starting to turn the corner out of their sluggishness.

When you are targeting these early spring bass (both largies and smallies) what are your "go to" baits and techniques?  Would love to hear what to try as I head out this weekend!

Thanks all!

Mass was like that a few weeks ago and I had great success on a jig in 40 degree water. Work it slow and bump it off that cover

jigs, suspending jerk bait, and lipless cranks fished real slow hopping like a jig

Ice has been out for more than a month. Early spring is mostly over and the fish are in prespawn with a lot of fish up. Fish docks and rocks and wood  with jigs tubes or senkos and fish the transitions and flats with jerk baits cranks or spinnerbaits. Its been warm all week and water is going to be into the mid 50's and more by the weekend.

Next two or three weeks is prime time for a giant
