Fishing Raystown

Featured Replies

What techniques and locations are good for fishing Raystown Lake in September? Any info is very helpful. I'll be going there soon, and as far as bass I usually fish small lakes and big ponds, not huge lakes like Raystown.. I won't know where to start with that "offshore" business for bass, if that's what it is.

Stick with what you already know, there are a lot of shallow places to fish at Raystown.Get a boating and fishing map that has depth graduations on it. If you fish from shore, maybe get in touch with the park office for those areas.Good Luck

Where are you from? You should come to the meet up on the 25th.

Anyway, the bass should be on fire this month. They will start eating shad like crazy to get fat for winter. Depending on the weather (mainly the temperature) you'll probably find fish at any depth. Fall is the best time to hit Raystown, all the big game species are active!

I'd love to come, but I live in Lancaster and I can't drive yet. :o

But I am dying to get out with some one who KNOWS bass fishing and have them show me where to find em, how to catch em, ect. Reading a website only does so much, and there's nothing like having a skilled angler beside you. Once I can drive, you will see me at these events.  8-)

This is what I think when you say shad: gray-white spinnerbaits and swim jigs and crankbaits. Is that recommended?

If the wonderful PA weather doesn't go through an extreme cold snap, you will probably find some decent topwater action.

If you are lucky enough to find them boiling on the surface a fluke, spook or trap run through or under the school could get you hooked up.

I'm banking on a swimbait bite.

Yeah swimbaits should be the ticket. Spinnerbaits are probably going to work too, just nded to have stained water (which raystown is almost always stained). Where are you launching from? Hit the feeder creeks and points first wherever you are, they will be a good spot to start especially if it's a point closer to the main lake.

Hopefully the bite will be as good as the shark bite was at OC.

I do believe you were helping your dad on a trip I was on this summer.

Yeah I probably was! Which trip were you?

I want to catch sharks on a swimbait.

Make it happen.   :o

In July.  Caught a gazillion sea bass...two keepers.  Then finished the day on shark.  The odd balls that needed the left handed spinning reel.

I still want to catch a shark on a swimbait.   ;D

Oh yeah! That was definitely a fun trip. But I'm back in school in PA now, and done helping out for this year.

Yes.  Brumbaugh bay is full of carp as is most of the lake.

BTW, I was up there Sunday afternoon.  Bass have definitely suspended it seems.  Baitfish everywhere on the surface.  Counted at least 40 bait schools around peewee island.  Surface temp was still 71 deg.

The Stripers are coming! The Stripers are coming! Man, we may have planned this trip just right! If this weather holds, Raystown is going to be PERFECT the next couple of weeks. Heck, if it gets a little colder, we may be able to troll for salmon :o Ok, I'm asking too much now!

If you want to see some big carp (not catch them, just see them) go to the Marina at Seven Points. People feed them there, sometimes it looks like you could walk across them and they are MASSIVE.

Hmm, carp?   That is not something my fishing partner wants to hear.  I get a little obsessed when carp are around.

I'll bring the bow just in case.   :o

I don't think I have even been in a shallow cove and not seen a carp on Raystown ;) This is like waiting for Christmas!

Again with the carp?

I would feel safer with you shooting the bow as oppsed to using a creepy crawler. I hate wearing a full helmet fishing with you. ;)

I don't know what you are referring to...

They like to eat the creepy crawler.   ;D

BK if you'd feel safer boating with Chris and myself, you're welcome too... HA

so id have a good chance for carp on the fly?!

Yes sir! Dip some flies in vanilla, carp love it!
