Spinnerbaits when should i start throwing them

Featured Replies

Im just curious i live in East Tn and our water in the lakes are around 50-53 right now. When should i start throwing a spinnerbait. Is there a certain temp that these work better or should i try them anytime. It was extremely windy today like 30 mph wind with a lot of chop on the water today just wondering if i should have tried a spinnerbait. Just like to get some info on them on when to start throwing them in the spring i use them a lot in the summer months.

I usually start throwing them when the water gets around 55 degrees.

ok so it is getting pretty close then. Is there a good place to start throwing these around this time of the year right now the water is so low hear this time of the year that there is no brush to throw them to. The lakes are still about 20 feet low here. But coming up.

Spinnerbaits are an excellent imitation of NOTHING!

Accordingly, they work best when the bass's vision is sharply compromised, for instance

at night, in murky water or under a wind-blown surface that skews the image ;)

I think that is why they work so good on choppy water. Kinda like a Buzz Bait that does not look like any type of Shad i have ever seen.

Start right now!

I live in Michigan, and i'll probably start throwing one in two weeks(the first time i get out).

The temperature is just starting to warm here - i think last week was the first time that all of the snow had melted.

I've had success early in the season(beg of April) fishing them in very shallow water - basically throwing them along a shoreline with any kind of cover.

And don't be affraid to fish them either. One of the my most successful early season trips ever involved me fishing a spinnerbait near the surface in shallow water - so i was basically burning it.

should i only throw them if there is chop on the water??????

Absoultely not.

I have had a ton of success on them in many different conditions - including water that is so still that it looks like glass.

It goes without saying, bass can be caught on a spinnerbait in calm, clear water, but that wouldn't be playing the percentages.

The number of unproductive retrieves can usually be reduced by using the most appropriate lure.

"ANYTHING" that skews the image of the spinnerbait tends to improve it's success:

> Nighttime

> Overcast Skies

> Choppy Water

> Murky Water

> Any Combination of the above

Slow rolling a spinnerbait with water in the low 50s will work, especially if you add a lift/drop retrieve in there at times. I find spinnerbaits work best once the water is warmer and weedgrowth has set it, but sometimes it's a good presentation to cover water early in the year. I would use smaller models this time of year though. And spinnerbaits work in both choppy and glass like water.

I admit I catch the bulk of my bass in the low 50s on senkos, jig/pigs, tubes, and various other finesse plastics. A suspending jerkbait or even a shallow diving crank, fished with a stop and go retrieve, works as well.
